Interviewer: Please describe your job title and primary duties.
Bob Evans Kitchen Prep: I was a kitchen prep, so pretty much I prepared all the … Pretty much prepared everything, and made sure all the produce was sliced, made sure we had soups that could be heated up and ready. So, I made sure all the servers had all the soups ready. I made sure the grill line had everything stocked. I made the salads, I made the desserts. I made all like the rolls and biscuits and there was a lot that the kitchen prep had to do, so.

Interviewer: What was the work environment like?
Bob Evans Kitchen Prep: It was kind of isolated, like I was … You had the restaurant and then in the back, you had like the grill area,, and then the kitchen prep station was behind everything. So I was kind of by myself for most of it.

Interviewer: What was your favorite part about working there?
Bob Evans Kitchen Prep: I got free food, and it was good pay as well. They started me off at $10 an hour when I was like 16, so I thought that was amazing.

Interviewer: Please describe the application and interview process.
Bob Evans Kitchen Prep: It was kind of a unique situation where I, the Bob Evans I was at, they were very understaffed, so I literally handed in my application. They said, “All right, can you come back tomorrow for a job interview?” They didn’t even look at the application or anything. I pretty much came in and they said, “All right, well we need kitchen preps. Can you do that?” And I was like, “Yeah.” “Okay, you’re hired.” So, it wasn’t a real interview. They were just looking for people to put in positions so they could run the restaurant.

Interviewer: How were you notified that you received the job?
Bob Evans Kitchen Prep: It was by phone, and it was like a few hours after, and then I went in a few days later for orientation and just went from there.

Interviewer: What other advice would you give to a job seeker looking to gain employment?
Bob Evans Kitchen Prep: Don’t be a kitchen prep, or at least ask if they’re understaffed. Because the kitchen prep was supposed to be three people. I was, 90% of the time I was the only one there, at 16 years old. I didn’t even get proper training because they were so understaffed. So, if you’re going in there and go to grill or be a server.

Interviewer: Please describe your job title and primary duties.
Bob Evans Prep Cook: I was kitchen production, which meant I prepped and made most of the food and dishes to get ready for the grill. I also made salads to order and desserts.

Interviewer: What was the work environment like?
Bob Evans Prep Cook: It was pretty fast-paced, but for the most part it was actually pretty good. Kind of close knit.

Interviewer: Please describe a typical day as an employee.
Bob Evans Prep Cook: When I come in, I usually get my apron, my hat, wash up, clean up a little bit, make sure my area is clean, because it usually is, but every now and again someone on the shift before might not do it. I make sure my area is clean, then I usually start prepping. Anything else I usually asked the grill cooks if what they need on the line, if they need pasta portioned out, bread made, any biscuits, or anything, I just do it immediately. Then orders would come in for salads and desserts and stuff. I get those out of the way. Then from there I get prepping for the day for the next day or the next weekend, or the next three days, just to make the job easier on myself.

Interviewer: How would you describe the application and interview process?
Bob Evans Prep Cook: The application and interview process was… I turned in an application, I actually had to call them back a couple times just to let them know I’m serious about the job. Then, they called me back with for an interview. I had one interview with assistant manager, and an interview with the general manager. Once I had the interview with the general manager I went to training, which is pretty much on-the-job training from the first day and then I just started and hit the ground running.

Interviewer: What questions did the interviewer ask during the job interview?
Bob Evans Prep Cook: One question I can think of that stuck in my mind was: “Why do you want to work for Bob Evans?” And at the time I really felt I could get experience in cooking, because that’s something I really love to do is cook, and I felt like I could get experience in prepping on an industrial scale. One thing about them was efficiency and quality and being fast, extremely fast, and that was always one of my weakest areas and it definitely helped me speed up.

Interviewer: What set you apart from other candidates?
Bob Evans Prep Cook: I let them know where my weaknesses were to begin with, and where they could help me, and how I was planning to help myself. So, probably my straightforwardness and honesty helped.

Interviewer: What other advice would you give to a job seeker looking to gain employment?
Bob Evans Prep Cook: Make sure it’s a good fit to do something. Make sure you’re what they need, and make sure that place is what you need, and help each other and be an asset as opposed to liability.
