Job Description and Duties
A Bob Evans server treats every customer with exceptional care and consideration. Like many other restaurant workers, Bob Evans servers perform duties, such as seating patrons, taking food and drink orders, serving dishes to the right diners, and checking out customers at the end of the meal. A serving position with Bob Evans comes with certain physical requirements, as well. Bob Evans servers must feel comfortable walking and standing for several hours during a shift. Servers must also possess the ability to handle several ranges of human emotion from customers and act accordingly. Bob Evans Server: I’m a server and a hostess and a carry-out person. I pick up the phone and answer and take out to curbside and get the order ready, and whatever a server does. Everyone knows what they do.

Interviewer: What was the work environment like?
Bob Evans Server: It’s clean, very friendly, and professional. What we wear is very classy.

Interviewer: What was your favorite part about working there?
Bob Evans Server: I like the people there. I like random people coming and talking to us. When I’m serving, you just get to know a lot of people, but then they leave in like half an hour.

Interviewer: Please describe a typical day as an employee.
Bob Evans Server: In the wintertime, it’s very slow, so we have a lot of free time. We still get stuff done, but it’s fun there.

Interviewer: What should an applicant wear to the job interview?
Bob Evans Server: I think they should wear the uniform; black pants, button down with the little buttons on the side, and black shoes.

Interviewer: What other advice would you give to a job seeker looking for employment?
Bob Evans Server: The application was really short. It didn’t ask me the days I was available or anything, but they just recently got a new application, which I haven’t really looked over. But the interview just asked me why I want to work here, why I want to be a server, and all that jazz.

Bob Evans Server: My primary title was server at Bob Evans. Primary duties were to take a customer’s order, put it in the system, then serve them their food, take their used plates away, and make sure they were satisfied.

Interviewer: What was the work environment like?
Bob Evans Server: The work environment was very pleasant. The managers were all friendly, helpful. It was a very clean environment. They were very conscientious about their food being prepared in a certain manner. If anything didn’t look appropriate, you were to throw it out, no questions asked, and start all over.

Interviewer: What was your favorite part about working there?
Bob Evans Server: My favorite part of working there was getting to know people within the community I live in. You have the regulars that come in, who are in there every Wednesday for a certain meal. They come in every Friday with their family because that’s the night out. It was nice to see that.

Interviewer: Please describe a typical day as an employee.
Bob Evans Server: A typical work day was pretty standard; you went in, got acquainted with the section you were in, waited for the previous server’s customers to leave, then started seating and taking orders, and kind of went from there.

Interviewer: How would you describe the application and interview process?
Bob Evans Server: The application and interview process was fairly simple. I went in, filled out an application, and actually did an interview on the spot at that moment. It was like a 10-minute interview, very quick and simple. They basically asked did I have any previous experience, and I had, so they hired me.

Interviewer: What should an applicant wear to the interview?
Bob Evans Server: Appropriate attire for a Bob Evans interview, or any interview actually, would be professional. Nice pair of pants, nice blouse, maybe a blazer. Light makeup, no perfume.

Interviewer: What questions did the interviewer ask during the job interview?
Bob Evans Server: During the interview, he asked why I wanted the job, what hours I would be available, basic background information, my previous work experience, things like that.

Interviewer: Did you earn any benefits or other job perks?
Bob Evans Server: If you worked over a certain number of hours, you were entitled to a half price meal. They did carry health insurance and things like that if you were a full-time server. Discounted meals… even if you came in and you weren’t working that day, you were entitled to a discount. That was about it.

Interviewer: What other advice would you give to a job seeker looking to gain employment?
Bob Evans Server: Advice: just be patient. One thing that’s nice about Bob Evans is everybody has a steady shift. You work the same days every week and just go with it.

Bob Evans Waitress: I am a waitress, so my duties are to take care of the dining customers and occasionally carry-out customers on the telephone.

Interviewer: What was the work environment like?
Bob Evans Waitress: It can be kind of competitive with other servers, because you work off tips. You have a small wage, but it’s not really the substance of your salary, so it can be a little competitive. But people tend to work together pretty well.

Interviewer: Please describe a typical day as an employee.
Bob Evans Waitress: A server would normally come in, like I worked the night shift, so I would come in between three and five. It was usually prepping for the actual rush, and getting salads, getting soups ready, getting those kinds of things. Once you move into the rush, it’s basically just keeping everything in order, knowing what tasks you need, and dealing with your time in the schedule well, getting everything out when it needs to get out. So, it’s actually time management throughout the night.

Interviewer: How would you describe the application and interview process?
Bob Evans Waitress: I printed an application off-line and filled it out at home. I called before I went, so I knew that they could see me. I sat down with one of the assistant managers, and he talked to me about hours and expectations, and those kinds of things. Then, they said they would call me in for a second round with the general manager, who was the one that did all the hiring. I came in and talked with her, and then received the job.

Interviewer: What questions did the interviewer ask during the job interview?
Bob Evans Waitress: They definitely want to know what your time commitment capabilities are. They don’t really want to hire somebody that can only work two days a week, between four hours. So, being open to closing, being open to working weekends, and that kind of thing is really important to them. They also care about your past history of jobs, like if you had been employed somewhere else or why were you terminated from another place – that concerns them. Your record – they asked about your record, if you have a clean record. Then, typically with students, they also ask about your grades, because that can give insight into the kind of worker you’re going to be. If you work hard in school, you’re going to work hard at your job.

Interviewer: What set you apart from other candidates?
Bob Evans Waitress: I think it was my availability and my academic record with my school. Then, I knew of the manager, and the manager knew of me, so that helped a little bit, in terms of reputation with knowing other servers that were working there at the time that could pledge for me being a good potential server.

Interviewer: What other advice would you give to a job seeker looking to gain employment?
Bob Evans Waitress: Make sure you’re really honest about your time commitment. If you tell them you’re really available and then you come up with three days a week where you need to change your schedule, they typically get frustrated with that. Don’t try to come in for an interview in the middle of the night or the middle of the day. It’s really important to choose which time to call or come in for an interview or turn in an application. Because if you should one… don’t call; you should come in and see the managers. They don’t really like it when you just call. Or do it online. In person is always best. Come in probably toward three o’clock, when it’s in between shifts and it’s not busy, because managers don’t want to take the time to worry about applicants if it’s busy and forget about customers.
