How do I begin the Hiring Process?

Interviewer: Please describe your job title and primary duties.
Bravo Hostess: I worked at Bravo as a hostess. I welcomed customers, organized which tables they were going to.
Interviewer: What was the work environment like?
Bravo Hostess: For the most part is was really positive. It’s very fast paced, definitely. The customers are all really, really friendly.
Interviewer: What was your favorite part about working there?
Bravo Hostess: I definitely loved the customers. They were always really friendly, really happy, really nice, happy to be there.
Interviewer: Please describe a typical day as an employee.
Bravo Hostess: Depending on which shift I was working I would come in probably a little bit before my shift, clock in, then take a look and depending on what time my shift started at, because sometimes if you start in the middle of a dinner rush it’s different. Depending on your role for the day … Some people are there just to seat people. Other people are supposed to stand, another hostess might be standing at the board figuring out who is going to go where. Some days I would run the board, which meant a lot of logistics of figuring out whose turn it was to get a table and where they were going and everything. Alternatively, when I first started I would just do a lot of the seating.
Interviewer: How would you describe the application and interview process?
Bravo Hostess: I actually just walked into Bravo and asked for an application. I don’t think they have anything online and most of the managers that I worked with all preferred for people to come in in person. I filled out an application, and before I’d even finished the application, the manager was there interviewing me. I knew before I left that I had the job, so it was pretty quick.
Interviewer: What questions did the interviewer ask during the job interview?
Bravo Hostess: I think they asked about just how I’d deal with people, how I would deal with difficult customers, that kind of stuff.
Interviewer: What set you apart from other candidates?
Bravo Hostess: I think I tried to stay really friendly and positive. Obviously, the turnover rate in restaurants is a little bit higher, so being professional, positive, not being “this is the dead end job, the last one I could get” goes a long way.
Interviewer: What other advice would you give to a job seeker looking to gain employment?
Bravo Hostess: At this job or any other job, I would definitely say just stay positive. Figure out how you fit the job, what you can do for them, as opposed to what they can do for you.
