Interviewer: Please describe your job title and primary duties.
Discount Tire Employee: At Discount Tire, I was in charge of shipping the tires. I actually just made sure orders were correct, and I would put them into the system, put the label on them, and put them on trucks. Before that, I would pick and pull the invoices, as well as the eBay inventory in the back.

Interviewer: What was the work environment like?
Discount Tire Employee: It was a great atmosphere. Everyone’s friendly. It’s a little bit dirty. Obviously, with all the tires, it’s a little dirty. But, they provide you with uniforms, and you’re required to wear black pants, black shoes, and a belt, but its pretty relaxed.

Interviewer: What was your favorite part about working there?
Discount Tire Employee: Everyone was really friendly. It was really nice, they cared about you, and made sure you were doing okay, your family was okay, made sure you didn’t go over 40 hours a week. It was a requirement. It was a friendly environment.

Interviewer: Please describe a typical day as an employee.
Discount Tire Employee: When you get there, you go to your section. You start immediately on what you were working on last night. So, it’s non-stop movement. So, it’s not a job where you can just sit around. It’s definitely a very physical job.

Interviewer: How would you describe the application and interview process?
Discount Tire Employee: I heard about it through a friend, so I went in, put in a resume in person, and they ended up calling me about a week later. I went into the interview. I met with one of the managers, did the basic interview questions for about half an hour, met with the actual owner of the site and talked with him for about 15 minutes. They asked if I wanted the job, and I said yes.

Interviewer: What questions did the interviewer ask during the job interview?
Discount Tire Employee: They want to make sure you’re passionate to learn about different tires; there’re thousands of different tires to know about, and you have to know the right size, speed ratings, etc. They give you a little basic class and a booklet, and they teach you, but you have to really try to learn this stuff about tires.

Interviewer: What set you apart from other candidates?
Discount Tire Employee: Definitely have a passion for cars. Little bit of confidence never hurts. Really good resume, and probably knowing someone who works there helped out a little bit.

Interviewer: Did you earn any benefits or other job perks?
Discount Tire Employee: You work really hard there. There are tons of benefits. If you get employee of the month, they give you a $50 gift card to Walmart. Your name goes up on a little plaque. They aren’t afraid to give a raise. It’s always great, especially right now. And, that’s about it.

Interviewer: What other advice would you give to a job seeker looking to gain employment?
Discount Tire Employee: Take a little time, learn about tires before you go in, if you can impress them. Have a decent passion about it. Definitely be confident in your abilities. Don’t be scared, print out a good resume, and just answer the questions honestly.

Interviewer: Please describe your job title and primary duties.
Discount Tire Tech: I started out as a tire tech and I ended up as a crew chief. Basically we ran what we called “cells” and the garage was divided into cells and each cell took care of two cars and there were four-man teams. And the positions were kind of hierarchical: you had your two tire techs, a crew chief and then – what was the top guy called? Crew chief, and then service coordinator – was the top guy in your cell and we’d change tires all day long, as fast as you can imagine. No breaks, no slow-downs, busy all day, hard work. I worked in College Station doing that for a little while and we were one of the busiest stores in North America so it was really, really busy, never break.

Interviewer: What was your favorite part about working there?
Discount Tire Tech: Yeah, did, you know. I like work like that, I like manual labor. The rest of my job experience is kind of what I like to do. Or even if it’s not that it’s waiting tables so it’s still busy. So the good part about it is you’re not going to be bored at all, you’re not watching the clock.

Interviewer: How would you describe the application and interview process?
Discount Tire Tech: The application process is pretty standard. You can go in – I would do it in person. I think you can do it online but they prefer to see people, they’re still kind of old-school. It’s more traditional company. So I’d go in and get your application filled out and just go back and bug them. Drop it off, check if they want to talk to you, come back the next day to see if they want to talk to you again, and just keep coming back until eventually they’ll give you an interview. And once they do they’ll pretty much put you to work right away. And have standard drug test: they give you like 24-hours to go to a lab and get your drug test done and come back. And that’s that. They put you to work. They give you a tee shirt before they give you a monogrammed uniform shirt because a lot of kids don’t make the cut first couple weeks.

Interviewer: What questions did the interviewer ask during the job interview?
Discount Tire Tech: Just talking about job experience just to see if you’d be able to handle yourself. You know they don’t discriminate against size but if you’re a smaller guy they’re definitely going to be reluctant to hire you because pretty much everyone there is larger. Just a lot of the weight, the machine, I mean it’s all day, it’s lifting, it’s work.

Interviewer: How were you notified that you received the job?
Discount Tire Tech: I got hired on the spot. So I did my interview and the manager’s like, “I like you, you’re in.” By the time I dropped my application started working there was probably no more than four, five days.

Interviewer: What other advice would you give to a job seeker looking to gain employment?
Discount Tire Tech: If you’re going to try to become employed at Discount Tire I would be in it for the long run because the true benefits of working at Discount Tire don’t show up for the long run. But once they do they’re really good. Like I said it’s a conservative Christian company and they have really good benefits for their employees – their full-time employees – not just your regular garage employees like me. But you can work your way up to being running a cell if you don’t like dealing with people or eventually go out to sales out in the front. I know guys there that make 14, 15 an hour and you know that’s just because they’ve been there for years and once you get full-time you get all those benefits for like six, seven dollars a week. You can have full healthcare coverage and dental for your family, I mean it’s ridiculously cheap. And then the general managers can make quarter million. It’s a good long-run job if you don’t have a college degree and you don’t want to get into the corporate world or anything like that.

    I was interviewed Saturday. I went for a drug test Monday (yesterday). How long should I wait to follow up? Should I call them tomorrow or wait for them to call me since in the interview they stated they are looking to hire within the next week?

    When you went in to get drug tested did they do it on the spot in the store or did they have you go somewhere to take it?
