Interviewer: Please describe your job title and primary duties.
Dollar General Sales Floor Associate: I was a cashier at Dollar General and I was also known as a sales floor associate. Because at Dollar General it would usually just be two people on register, so one would be on register and one would be facilitating the whole store. It was a smaller Dollar General location, so one would just be facilitating the store and making sure everything was alright. So, primary duties would consist of just ringing out the customers and when I’m on sales floor associate, straightening up the items on the rack, I mean shelves – making sure everything looked nice, put the stuff on shelves, so inventory, stocking, stuff like that.

Interviewer: What was the work environment like?
Dollar General Sales Floor Associate: Work environment, it was very quiet because usually it was just two, three – it would be like two workers and the manager on shift, so it was very quiet. Small, like I said. It can get crowded sometimes. Since it was smaller, it could backfire on us because if it gets crowded, the line could be backed up down the aisles and stuff. Another team-oriented place, so communication was key. We had to talk on walkie-talkies because one is in the store and one is up front. So you’ve got to keep an eye on everything. But it was a nice environment.

Interviewer: Please describe the application and interview process.
Dollar General Sales Floor Associate: It was about one page front and back. They just asked for expected pay, college, I mean education history, where I worked before, and why I wanted to work there. And that was pretty much it – and references. I remember that because it was actually really short, and I did it at the store and I turned it in at the store, so it was kind of a quick process. They got back to me in a couple of days because it said help wanted in the window. So I just went in there and got the application, and that’s probably why I was so sure because they needed people.

Interviewer: What questions did the interviewer ask during the job interview?
Dollar General Sales Floor Associate: Interview process, it was with one person, I’m assuming it was the general manager at the time. He interviewed me, asked about 10, 12 questions: where I used to work at, why I want to work at Dollar General, my experience as a cashier. I got asked a couple of math questions just to make sure I could do the cashier duties, but it was pretty easy. It went by in about 10 minutes.

Interviewer: How were you notified that you received the job?
Dollar General Sales Floor Associate: He gave me a phone call. He got back to me in a couple of days. I had seen it coming because I remember the help wanted sign, so that means he needs people, so I might be hearing from him soon. He told me it would be about a week, two weeks, but I figured it’d be sooner.

Interviewer: What set you apart from other candidates?
Dollar General Sales Floor Associate: He said I was the first one that came in there in a nice dress shirt. People would just come in, like, t-shirts sometimes, jeans. They don’t think it’s that serious of a job because it’s Dollar General, but I just took it serious, so he said that stood out. He said not too many people were applying, so that showed that at least I wanted a job or needed one at least.

Interviewer: What other advice would you give to a job seeker looking to gain employment?
Dollar General Sales Floor Associate: Take the job serious. If you think it’s not a serious job just because of the name of the place, still take it serious because that might be what stands you out from the other people.
