Dollar General sales associates perform various entry-level job duties typical of similar retail stores. Interviewer: Please describe your job title and primary duties.
Dollar General Stocker: My title was a store clerk. I stocked shelves. When the truck would come in, we would unload the truck, stock the shelves, bring everything to the floor, sometimes take them into the stocking area. Then, inventory stuff in and out.
Interviewer: What was the work environment like?
Dollar General Stocker: That was great. I mean, when I first started there, I felt like I didn’t fit in at first. But, I’m a people person, and within a couple days, it was like a family environment. They accepted me, I accepted them. You enjoyed going to work. I enjoyed going to work.
Interviewer: What questions did the interviewer ask during the job interview?
Dollar General Stocker: They wanted to know was I married, and at that point I wasn’t, but I told them I had a fiancée. They asked me did I have transportation, they asked me about my prior jobs, did I know anybody that was working there at the time. At that point in time, I didn’t know anyone.
Interviewer: What set you apart from other candidates?
Dollar General Stocker: I had references. I had some references. I think my enthusiasm… I was excited. I let them know that I wanted the job. I didn’t need the job; I wanted the job. I had a car, and it was real convenient in a lot of ways. I shopped at that store a lot, too. I think that had a lot to do with it. It was in my neighborhood. All those things combined, and also I’m a people person. I think that was real impressive. That and I dressed really well. I was dressed really nice.
Interviewer: What other advice would you give to a job seeker looking to gain employment?
Dollar General Stocker: I would tell them if you’re not comfortable in an interview, go practice an interview. I would tell them to dress appropriate. I would tell them get there early, and some pre-determined questions you may want to ask your interviewer or employer.
