Interviewer: Please describe your job title and primary duties.
Finish Line Sales Associate: I’m a sales associate. I’m just like the basic employee there. I’m the guy that greets you when you come through the door. Nothing spectacular at all. I get commission pay. For every pair of shoes I sell, I get a commission, and that’s about it.
Interviewer: What was the work environment like?
Finish Line Sales Associate: The environment is one of the best I’ve ever been in. I’ve had a few jobs, and it’s by far the best one. Everyone’s chilled, laid back, nothing stressful at all. It’s really relaxing. It’s fun to go to work.
Interviewer: Please describe a typical day as an employee.
Finish Line Sales Associate: At the start of the day, just get on the floor, start helping out customers find what they need in the back, grab it. Sometimes that’s the hardest part, finding a shoe in the back. A lot of the time, we don’t have the shoes. So, sometimes we just have to tell them we don’t have it. That, and at the end of the day, we sweep, mop, clean up the store, and we were out by about 9:30pm, 10:00pm – so never too late or anything like that.
Interviewer: How would you describe the application and interview process?
Finish Line Sales Associate: The interview process was simple. Basically, the whole application was online. I didn’t have to do anything at all. It was all written, background check, all of that. It was really simple. I actually had two interviews. It was one on one with the store manager. The questions were my background with shoes, basically just picking my brain, knowing what I know about the shoes.
Interviewer: What questions did the interviewer ask during the job interview?
Finish Line Sales Associate: A few questions they asked me… they asked what my goals were, they asked what my biggest motivation was. He wanted those questions in detail. Other than that, it was basically… basic stuff, age. Other than that, it was nothing crazy.
Interviewer: What set you apart from other candidates?
Finish Line Sales Associate: My knowledge. My knowledge of shoes. That’s something you need to know. They want someone that knows a lot about shoes. Not just basketball shoes or anything, but cross-country, hiking shoes, all different kinds. That’s probably the main thing that made me different.
Interviewer: What other advice would you give to a job seeker looking to gain employment?
Finish Line Sales Associate: I’d say just make sure you study, just know your shoes. If they ask you a question about a brand of shoe or style, know what it is. Don’t just be clueless to the whole thing. That’s about it.

Finish Line Sales Associate: Really, you should be a customer first, that really helps here, to have a faithful customer. You go in a lot, and they’ll recognize you, and it’ll help out a lot.

Finish Line Sales Associate: I guess my confidence in the interview. If you know what you’re talking about, I think the most important part is letting them know that you’re good with people, because you have to work with people the entire day.

Finish Line Sales Associate: Be comfortable with a lot of different types of customers, maintain a good attitude with the people, and stay confident, that’s about it. You work with people a lot, so that’s really the main thing.

We try to sell customers sneakers and other types of shoes, just based on what they’re looking for, so they’re looking for something comfortable, you try to get them into something that fits their needs. Another thing we did was stocking shoes when they came in, and inventory.
Interviewer: What was the work environment like?
Finish Line Sales Associate: The work environment was pretty chill, for the most part. It’s no commission, so it’s not like a big pressure, but you still want to sell shoes.
Interviewer: What was your favorite part about working there?
Finish Line Sales Associate: My favorite part was definitely being able to help people find everything that they needed, because the biggest difference between this job and Lids was at Finish Line. People usually don’t know exactly what you’re looking for, but they know kind of what they want, so biggest thing for them was helping them find something that fitted for what they wanted.
Interviewer: How would you describe the application and interview process?
Finish Line Sales Associate: The application process was online. The interview process… I went to the mall and had a personal interview with the manager at the time. It was formal, but it was a very relaxed feel. There was no pressure.

Finish Line Sales Associate: A lot of the questions had to do with personality, to see if I was the right person for the job, what kind of mindset I had. A few questions about experience in dealing with people.

Finish Line Sales Associate: I know I was very persistent. I was only in high school, but I had a cover letter and resume, so I was prepared, and I called weekly to see if the position had been filled, but I think that showed him that I really wanted the job, and luckily I got it.
Interviewer: What other advice would you give to a job seeker looking to gain employment?
Finish Line Sales Associate: I guess one of the biggest things I would tell them to expect is expect to be busy if you work at the mall, because it gets pretty busy.

Finish Line Sales Representative: All you did was greet customers as they walked in, then you would stand on whatever wall they told you to go on, and whether it be the men’s, women’s, or kids wall for shoes, then you just ask the customers what they’re looking for, help them finish as they wanted, and go from there when you check them out.
Interviewer: What was the work environment like?
Finish Line Sales Representative: Depended on where you work. I worked in the city, so there’s different kinds of customers coming in and out, people looking for different things, but as for the workers, they’re about 18, all the way up to around 30, for your managers, and they’re very chilled, very laidback, not very stressful, as long as you did what you’re told and help customers that walked in.
Interviewer: What was your favorite part about working there?
Finish Line Sales Representative: My favorite part was definitely the shoes, and the discounts that you got with it, and every once in a while, as you got seniority there, you get a free pair of shoes. So that was definitely a perk, and just a very chill environment. Not stressful, it was definitely a good starter job.
Interviewer: Please describe a typical day as an employee.
Finish Line Sales Representative: When you first came in, you would punch in, and obviously then you would see whatever manager is on duty, ask them what your goals are for the day, how many shoes you need to sell, or if there is something they need you to focus on, or what promotions were going on. Then, you probably work about a five-hour shift, give or take a couple of hours. Then, as you’re done working, you would go see a manager, and they would tell you whether you need to put more shoes out, or you have certain things that need to get done, you have to clean something or whatever it is, they would tell you to do that, then you just go ahead and punch out and leave.
Interviewer: How would you describe the application and interview process?
Finish Line Sales Representative: The application was actually a little bit lengthy because they would ask you roughly about 100 questions, saying if somebody came in and they would give you a description of the person – how would you act, how you would greet them, and just give you little situations that you have to respond what you would do they came in. Then, they asked you your personal information, school, if you had another job, references. In the interview, they just ask you about the same things that were on the application just to make sure it was actually you filling it out. It was just a little bit about yourself, why you wanted to work there, who told you about the job, and that’s basically about it.
Interviewer: What set you apart from other candidates?
Finish Line Sales Representative: Probably the fact that I was personable yet be very personable because you’re definitely interacting with a variety of people on a day-to-day basis so as long you can keep the conversation going you’re not standing there staring at someone, so I definitely with the person that was interviewing me, I was talking to them, asked them questions about themselves as well. You just have to engage yourself in the conversation and make sure that your being attentive.
Interviewer: What other advice would you give to a job seeker looking to gain employment?
Finish Line Sales Representative: I would tell them the yourself. They obviously know that your kids, so you’re not trying to stay here for the rest of your life. Just put in the effort and ask questions and give it your all. Don’t sit there and treat it as “anything.” Make sure that you’re putting your all in there and you’re just being honest and doing what you’re told.
