How to Get a Job at Firehouse Subs
Applicants who seek out Firehouse Subs jobs in person typically spend about a week going through the hiring process. The nationwide sub sandwich chain also offers access to jobs online. Either avenue results in a one-to-one, question-and-answer session with a supervisor, restaurant manager, or district manager. If job seekers apply online, they may receive same-day job interview invites via email. The network of sandwich shops conducts very basic hiring sessions. Average time spent in job interviews falls between 15 and 20 minutes, with managers sometimes interviewing for up to an average of 45 minutes, at most.
A Focus on Customer Service
The hiring process tests applicants on the ability to verbally engage with the general public, in addition to memorization skills. Workers should study the meats, cheeses, breads, and toppings used in Firehouse Subs foods in order to impress hiring managers. Specific interview questions may test the ability of applicants to memorize food orders and menu items effectively. Other areas interview questions address include customer service, personal habits, and hobbies. Some locations may drug test new-hire workers, though many locations simply reserve the right to randomly select associates for drug screenings at any time. Successful candidates usually start work immediately or as soon as possible and train with a supervisor for roughly a week or two.
Firehouse Subs Sandwich Maker Interview Video
Video Transcript
Interviewer: Please describe your job title and primary duties.
Firehouse Subs Sandwich Maker: I was a sandwich maker and I had to put together the sandwiches, clean up after the customers, make the sweet tea in the morning. Firehouse actually, the cut their own meats and cheeses so I had to do that; stuff like that.
Interviewer: What was the work environment like?
Firehouse Subs Sandwich Maker: It was really friendly. It was a lot of students because we’re near the university right now. It was really nice. The giving back to the community, we’re always donating to some sort of a charity so that was really nice. I felt like we all got along really well and my team that I worked with, we believe in teamwork so one person would do one task and we’d rotate between the tasks every night when we were closing, so that was nice.
Interviewer: How would you describe the application and interview process?
Firehouse Subs Sandwich Maker: For firehouse at that time … Now they do an application. You can do it in person, I think you can do it online too, but I did it in person. You fill out the application and you have to, obviously with any job you ever apply for you want to follow up. Followed up a couple of times, had an interview with the store owner. They’re franchises so they’re usually owned by individual owners. If you’re lucky you can talk to one of them and tell them how excited you are about the job and the experience that you have. That’s what I did. I had an interview and I was hired on the spot, which is cool.
Interviewer: What questions did the interviewer ask during the job interview?
Firehouse Subs Sandwich Maker: Yeah. If I had any food experience. I’d prior worked at Adventure Island, at Busch Gardens in food service, so I’d already had some experience. I definitely think that a lot of employers want to see that you had experience, and if you don’t they want to see your willingness to learn.
Interviewer: What other advice would you give to a job seeker looking to gain employment?
Firehouse Subs Sandwich Maker: Be yourself and work really hard, and try to be the most courteous person you can be, but also try to be extremely efficient at your job, and be prepared to learn how to clean really well because it’s important in food service to be as cleanly as possible.
