How to Get a Job at Food Lion
A Delhaize Group company, Food Lion ranks as one of the largest grocery store chains in the United States. The supermarket chain offers employment opportunities through a network of roughly 1,100 locations. To make finding grocery store jobs easier, the grocer implements a simple hiring process for both entry-level positions and professional careers. Applicants must complete all parts of the hiring process in order to work for the supermarket company. Information gathered through employment documents generally determines applicant eligibility for interviews.
Initial Interviews
The standard hiring process most Food Lion applicants go through includes a brief, 20 to 30-minute job interview with a select manager. The interviewers most encountered include customer service managers or store managers. Applicants often report hiring managers taking the time to schedule interviews when convenient for the candidate, although prospective grocery store associates may not hear back from the grocery retailer for weeks after submitting application forms to a desired location.
Typical Questions Faced
Typical interview questions touch on various aspects of customer service, computation, manual labor, and availability. Standard interview questions for most candidates include: "What are your personal strengths and weaknesses?", "Do you have any expectations of working for Food Lion?", "Have you ever had to deal with difficult or intentionally stubborn customers?", and "What are your career goals?" Specific interview questions typically cover job duties and reasons for seeking said position, such as: "What would be your biggest challenge to overcome while working for Food Lion?" and "How will you find time to balance work and personal life appropriately?"
Be Personable and Dress to Impress
The hiring process generally wraps up within a week of commencement. Job seekers normally land a job at the end of the final interview, if successful and deemed desirable by hiring personnel. Interviews demand attention to detail, well-groomed appearances, and sensible or formal business attire. Certain restrictions on hair length may require applicants to shave or trim up before attending interviews. In addition to appearances, Food Lion also selects candidates based on personalities. Applicants with outgoing, motivated, and friendly personalities regularly outperform other candidates during the hiring process.
Food Lion Cashier Interview Video
Video Transcript
Interviewer: Please describe your job title and primary duties.
Food Lion Cashier: I was a cashier. My primary duties were handle front end, take back anything that customers didn’t want, just your normal cashier duties.
Interviewer: What was the work environment like?
Food Lion Cashier: The store was clean. I got a consistent work schedule.
Interviewer: Please describe the application and interview process.
Food Lion Cashier: Pretty sure the application was online, so it was just a standard online application, had to fill out a questionnaire, resume, and then they called me in for an interview. My interview was literally like 20 minutes interview. They hired me pretty much right on the spot.
Interviewer: What questions did the interviewer ask during the job interview?
Food Lion Cashier: I remember them asking if I had reliable transportation. I mean, I was in high school. I didn’t have my driver’s license yet, but asking if I had reliable transportation, asking what my high school schedule was like, just kind of seeing that so that they could figure out how to work me in.
Interviewer: What set you apart from candidates?
Food Lion Cashier: I was really involved in high school and still had a decent GPA, so I think that showed my work ethic.
Interviewer: What other advice would you give to a job seeker looking to gain employment?
Food Lion Cashier: You got to be careful because I don’t know if this was specific to my store or if this kind of company in general. It was hard to get days off… as compared to the other jobs that I’ve worked. It’s very hard to get days off.
Food Lion Front End Associate Interview Video
Video Transcript
Interviewer: Please describe your job title and primary duties.
Food Lion Front End Associate: I was a front end associate for Food Lion Cash and Carry Sweetbay. My primary duty was bagging. I was a part time cashier and then I was the guy that got to grab carts.
Interviewer: How would you describe the application and interview process?
Food Lion Front End Associate: I went in there and I interviewed like I wasn’t going to get it. Made myself presentable, made myself as knowledgeable about the company as I could, so did a little bit of research online to see what the positions were like and what they entailed and then went in there and hopefully nailed the interview. Luckily I was offered the job and then when I got ready to move, the company was actually pretty easygoing about getting me transferred so I could keep my position or at least keep a steady income while I transitioned from living in Virginia to Florida.
Interviewer: What questions did the interviewer ask during the job interview?
Food Lion Front End Associate: I want to say one of the big questions was, they do kind of ask what your educational background is. They wanted to know if I had finished high school because if you’re going to deal with money as far as a cashier, they want to make sure that you know math, basic math. Another one is if you’re going to do stock or something, they’re going to ask if you have any weight limitations? Do you have any prior injuries? They’re actually pretty thorough about doing background checks at Food Lion, Inc. I was really surprised at all the things they needed to know. They’re pretty thorough when they do their research.
Interviewer: How were you notified that you received the job?
Food Lion Front End Associate: I think it was a couple days after I actually received a call from my friend’s mother, who worked there, she worked in the deli and she let me know because I didn’t have a phone at the time. She let me know that I got the job and that I was supposed to start with her, I think the next day on front end. That was how I found out.
Interviewer: What other advice would you give to a job seeker looking to gain employment?
Food Lion Front End Associate: Cashier, I think, was the greatest job there because you get to interact with a lot of different people. It’s a fairly easy job. Stock is really fun too if you’re meticulous and you’re kind of goal-oriented and visually oriented because a lot of it’s fronting product and making sure everything looks good on the shelves and making sure everything’s kind of uniform. So if that’s your thing, stock’s probably the best thing to do, but cashier is a pretty easy job and I enjoyed it a lot.

I am currently in high school. I am 16 and I get all a’s and b’s. I will work when ever it is convenient for you. I have done work before with mowing but that is it. I am enrolled in west brunswick high school. I run cross country and I wrestle. I will try my BEST! 200% all the time. I will strive to help even when my shift is over and I will do overtime.
