Foot Locker Interview Questions & Tips

How to Get a Job at Foot Locker

Top athletic shoe retailer Foot Locker hires shoe lovers.

The retail chain looks for people who model their wardrobes around company-endorsed brands, await shoe release dates, and buy multiple pairs of the same shoe. To gauge an applicant's passion for footwear, the retailer invites job hopefuls into the store for interviews. Job interview processes differ between floor associate and management roles. Interviews are relatively relaxed and follow a simple script.

Entry-Level Job Interviews

Cashier and sales representative are common floor associate jobs at Foot Locker, and interview processes for these positions are basic and straightforward.

What Questions Do They Ask?

In most cases, applicants face one 1:1 interview with an assistant manager or store manager.

Interviews typically start out with basic interview questions like:

Applicants may also be asked behavioral questions, such as:

  • What is your definition of customer service?"
  • "What do you do if we are out of a popular pair of sneakers?"

In some cases, hiring managers test an applicant's knowledge of the company or footwear trends. Cashier and sales associate applicants are often hired the same days as interview. If not offered jobs immediately, applicants may receive hiring notice a few days later.

Managerial Interview Questions

Managerial positions with Foot Locker, including shift leader, assistant manager, and store manager job titles, require candidates to undergo several interviews. Most interview questions inquire about leadership abilities and store operations skills.

With most questions, hiring personnel want managerial candidates to refer to relevant work experience. Managers are also expected to be good salespeople, and Foot Locker may ask managerial applicants to role-play and try to sell an item in the store. Many management job interviews feature salary negotiations at the end of the session.

Dress the Part

Applicants should dress appropriately for the Foot Locker job interview. Collared shirts and slacks are suitable for sales associate applicants. For footwear, applicants may wear dress shoes or shoes found in stores. Wearing shoes sold at store locations to the interview shows an interest in the company and passion for athletic footwear. Managerial applicants should dress in more formal business clothing.

Show a Genuine Interest

First and foremost, Foot Locker looks for workers that love shoes. Throughout the interview, candidates want to express their passion for shoes and knowledge of current styles and trends. Other important traits applicants want to show in the interview include strong communication skills, self-motivation, and the ability to work independently or in a team. When asked about past experience, applicants want to refer to times when they made smart, calculated actions to overcome challenges. All answers should be delivered in a confident, well-spoken manner.

Video Transcript

Interviewer: Please describe your job title and primary duties.
Foot Locker Employee: Retail, customer service, and inventory.

Interviewer: What was the work environment like?
Foot Locker Employee: Real busy. A lot of people coming in, getting all types of shoes. Busy every day.

Interviewer: What was your favorite part about working there?
Foot Locker Employee: The discount. No, I’m just playing. Basically, just working with people. Different people coming in, not too sure what they’re going to get – you help them with the guidelines they give you, certain questions they ask you, and you just work with them and try to find the best shoe for them.

Interviewer: Please describe a typical day as an employee.
Foot Locker Employee: It would be busy. A lot of antsy people coming in. Sometimes, you get people that have attitudes. Sometimes, you get people that are there to work for you. It’s always a different kind of thing to go through.

Interviewer: How would you describe the application and interview process?
Foot Locker Employee: You come in, you get the application. You can’t do the application inside the store, so you have to go out to the food court or something. Then, you come back in. Make sure you call them. For the interview, I would say, come with a nice pair of shoes because sneaker heads or managers will actually look at your shoes. That’s a first impression. That’s a real big thing.

Interviewer: What questions did the interviewer ask during the job interview?
Foot Locker Employee: They asked what made me come to Foot Locker, or how was I familiar with Foot Locker. I told them I was an avid shopper. I came in a lot. I told them I love shoes. They asked me how do I work with customers and employees. I told them I was pretty well-rounded, good with customers, customer service, persuasion. I’m good at sales, which is a big thing with them.

Interviewer: What other advice would you give to a job seeker looking to gain employment?
Foot Locker Employee: Make sure you know about your product knowledge. Know about shoes; running shoes, how shoes fit. If someone comes in looking for hiking, make sure you know about the boots and know about everything: socks, how to put clothes together with shoes. I couldn’t tell you about selling behaviors, but make sure you’re ready for it. Make sure you have a good arsenal of shoes yourself.

Foot Locker Cashier Interview Video

Video Transcript

Interviewer: Please describe your job title and primary duties.
Foot Locker Cashier: I was a cashier, and my duties entailed checking out the customers, and then if we weren’t as busy, I could go to the back, get customers’ shoes, help them try on shoes, size children. Sometimes, I had to price stock, do inventory, so things such as that.

Interviewer: What was the work environment like?
Foot Locker Cashier: I like customer service, so I would say that if you engage with the customers, they will engage back to you. So, it’s kind of the environment… it’s like what you make it. For me, it was a pretty friendly environment. I enjoyed it. I mean, some days, you had bad days, but my coworkers for the most part – they were pretty enthusiastic, especially being the job that it was. And if it’s commission based – you have to get sales, so you’re pretty friendly.

Interviewer: Please describe a typical day as an employee.
Foot Locker Cashier: First thing you do when you come in, you, of course, count into your drawer. Once you do that – if we’re not busy – then make sure the store is tidy and neat. So if there’s a shoe off the shelf, you want to go and replace that. You want to make sure if clothes are out of size order, make sure the appearance of the store stays nice and neat and appropriate for the customers. For the most part, that’s what I did. If someone needs help getting a shoe, I will help go find a shoe. If they need suggestions, I can help them do that, too.

Interviewer: How would you describe the application and interview process?
Foot Locker Cashier: I applied online, then they gave me a call. I came in. I knew someone who worked there before, so that’s how I got interested. I came in, did the interview, and then they ended up giving me a call back, so it was a pretty typical process.

Interviewer: What questions did the interviewer ask during the job interview?
Foot Locker Cashier: The questions were kind of behavioral questions. How would you react to the customer, customer response to things, if the customer needed this, so like situational stuff and how would I respond to that. Also, I had some questions, because I was a cashier, about like if the drawer was short or a customer, or something like that, how would I go about the situation, going about talking to the manager. So, questions along those lines, and then of course, they asked me about myself and kind of like what I liked.

Interviewer: What other advice would you give to a job seeker looking to gain employment?
Foot Locker Cashier: I would say you would definitely have to be a people person. You’re going to be around people. So, it’s like a service industry, and there are going to be consumers. So, I would definitely say know what you like, and if customer service is not something that you want to do, then I wouldn’t suggest it.
