FYE Interview Questions & Tips

Hiring process information for an interview at FYE

Initial Interview Process

For Your Entertainment, better known as FYE and stylized as f.y.e., interviews and hires job seekers on a regular basis in order to fill commonly vacant positions at more than 350 entertainment retail outlets across the country. The interview process offers an easy way for music and movie lovers to gain employment in the retail industry. Applicants typically only need to complete a single job interview to work for the chain of media and entertainment stores. Hiring managers usually interview candidates one-on-one and often hire qualified job seekers on the spot. Management positions normally call for drug testing following the conclusion of the interview process.

Relate to the Industry at Hand

Applicants should wear appropriately dressy business attire to interviews, as the electronics and entertainment retailer needs to hire workers with professional appearances and demeanors. Typical questions asked during job interviews generally cover standard topics like previous work experience and related skills, availability, and personal background. Candidates should prepare to answer common FYE interview questions like: "Tell me about a mistake you made on-the-job. How did you fix it?" and "Give an example of a time when you had to assume a leadership role. How did you perform?" Interviewees also field queries like, "How would you greet/help a customer?" and "How would you convince a shopper to buy a certain CD?", which examine customer service and sales abilities. Fittingly, interviewers may ask about personal music or movie preferences, as well.

FYE Retail Associate Interview Video

Video Transcript

Interviewer: Please describe your job title and primary duties.
FYE Retail Associate: My job title was just retail. I pretty much was just on the floor. I was the cashier and on the floor stocking stuff. It was really kind of a general job so I did whatever I could in the store.

Interviewer: What was the work environment like?
FYE Retail Associate: It was a lot of people my age and excited about music, mostly music. I know we sold movies and stuff like that too but everyone cared about music. We had people from different, who cared about different genres and all of that but it was a really young and energetic atmosphere.

Interviewer: How would you describe the application and interview process?
FYE Retail Associate: I just applied online. I found an ad for the job available online and after that I was called in for an interview by the manager and I just, that was pretty much it. I had the interview and four days later, I guess they were kind of understaffed at the time, so four days later I got a call back and they were interested in providing a job.

Interviewer: What questions did the interviewer ask during the job interview?
FYE Retail Associate: They actually did ask a few questions about what my music preferences were, to kind of get a temperature check on if I was interested in the stuff that I would be dealing with people about, if I was interested in the product. They did ask about that and then aside from that it was just a lot of questions that were geared towards figuring out how I interacted with people. They would ask stuff to throw me of as well. They would ask what are your three weak-, name three weaknesses, name three strengths, things like that as well that I’ve had in a lot of different interviews.

Interviewer: What set you apart from other candidates?
FYE Retail Associate: I think that I was really, I’m really good at interacting with people and kind of talking to them about music. I was really, I am really passionate about music so I think that’s something that they really look for in the application process because that’s their product, that’s their entire business. Yeah, they want to know that you care about, first they want to know that you care about what you’re doing there. They also want to know that you have the ability to interact with people and relate with them.

Interviewer: What other advice would you give to a job seeker looking to gain employment?
FYE Retail Associate: I think definitely that you should be interested, if you’re applying at FYE you should be interested in music, you should be interested in the product that you’re selling. Because if you’re interested in the product that you’re selling, it’s going to be much easier for you to relate with people from management to actual customers. I think that’s really the most important thing. Aside from that, just care about dealing with people and be able to manage multiple tasks at the same time and things like that.

Yeah, my primary duties … I mean sometimes I would like put away things that people left at the counter, but I mostly just worked the register.

Interviewer: What was the work environment like?
FYE Team Member: It was pretty cool. It definitely helped you get the job if you knew a lot about current music and stuff.
