Interviewer: Please describe your job title and primary duties.
Guess Sales Associate: I’ve been working there for about a year. At first, I started out as a sales associate, but then I started training for a stylist position.

Interviewer: What was the work environment like?
Guess Sales Associate: It was really fun. I actually worked at a Guess back home in the Bay area and then I transferred to a Guess store in Beverly Hills here. Definitely two different environments. A lot of upbeat music, a lot of running around and fast pace, because we have to be personal shoppers for each of our customers. The company wants you to clientele to the customer.

Interviewer: Please describe a typical day as an employee.
Guess Sales Associate: I’d definitely say the day kind of starts before you get to work. You’re expected to dress up from head to toe, so makeup, really nice clothes, and high heels. So, you’re kind of running around all day in five-inch heels, which can be hard. Other than that, identifying a customer and seeing what they’re looking for and not taking the “Oh, I’m just looking” answer, but actually try and sell them an entire outfit. It kind of becomes a challenge throughout the day, and you have different goals that you have to meet and different targets that you have to reach in order to make commission or make your sales goal for the day.

Interviewer: Did you earn any benefits or other job perks?
Guess Sales Associate: Depending on where your store is located, there’s different programs that Guess has that basically rewards the sales associates. Say that you make commission or you meet your goal or you meet a certain goal in the store – say we meet our shoe goal for the month, and the person that sold the most amount of shoes gets a pair of shoes. So, it goes from cash rewards to also Apple rewards and gift cards for actual clothing from the store.

Interviewer: How would you describe the application and interview process?
Guess Sales Associate: It was just like a paper application: resume, references, school experience, work experience, etc. After that, there was also an interview, which was kind of low-key. A lot of the questions were about your knowledge of the fashion industry, which was kind of shocking at first, because you don’t get that with a regular retail job. And then after the interview process, it’s just orientation, and you’re just thrown in there.

Interviewer: What questions did the interviewer ask during the job interview?
Guess Sales Associate: They definitely want to know your retail experience. During the interview, they sometimes put you through a test where you have to go out into the store and find an outfit around a key item that’s big for the company at the moment. So, they test your styling abilities and things like that.

Interviewer: What set you apart from other candidates?
Guess Sales Associate: I’d probably just say knowledge about not only the brand but fashion, as well. You just don’t want to walk in there like you’re applying to a fast food job or anything. You kind of have to prepare yourself for this type of job.

Interviewer: What other advice would you give to a job seeker looking to gain employment?
Guess Sales Associate: I’d definitely say to do your research about the brand. It kind of puts you above your peers. Also, knowing some of the key players in the game, because at a company like Guess you will get the opportunity to meet them if you do show potential to grow.

Interviewer: What was the work environment like?
G by Guess Cashier: Depending on if it’s the holiday season, it can be really hectic or if there are big sales or anything. On a day like this probably kind of slow paced. You have customers come in looking for something specific. Maybe the saw something on line. Just depending, like the rush of the holidays would also make it quite hectic.

Interviewer: How would you describe the application and interview process?
G by Guess Cashier: The application, I believe for me you had to go in the store and it helped if you knew someone because I actually have a friend who had a job there. She was able to help me. They ask you like any skills you have, like computer skills, organizing skills. Hours you’re available and days. If you have a high school diploma and if you expect to get the amount of wage, like minimum wage. Then your references. It was a one-page application, front and back.

Interviewer: What set you apart from other candidates?
G by Guess Cashier: I was very friendly. I like organizing things. Knowing someone definitely helped too. I had an eye, trying to see how they wanted to put clothes on display and the whole organization of this color, and this type of shirt, or this type of pant, or this kind of shoes. Especially with purses, I’m like a purse person. Things like that can catch the eye.

Interviewer: How were you notified that you received the job?
G by Guess Cashier: It was a phone call and it was about a week. They had a lot of applicants coming in at that same time.

Interviewer: What other advice would you give to a job seeker looking to gain employment?
G by Guess Cashier: Definitely be a people person. Make sure you like to stand on your feet because you’ll be standing most of the time. Just kind of go for it, sell yourself, make sure people will remember you and say I want to hire that person. Make them remember something about you that’s good like a smile or a handshake or something that you said during the interview.
