Interviewer: Please describe your job title and primary duties.
Holiday Inn Front Desk Clerk: At the Holiday Inn, I worked at the front desk as a front desk clerk. My job was to primarily check people in, answer phones, take care of little problems that customers would have, so I was primarily customer service. But, I checked in customers who were arriving to stay at our hotel.
Interviewer: How would you describe the application and interview process?
Holiday Inn Front Desk Clerk: The application was online. The interview was – I wouldn’t say extensive – but it was a little more extensive than average. I filled out the application and got an interview within two weeks, so I thought that was pretty good. Fairly fast for the professional world. Evidently, they needed people. The interview was pretty basic. They did throw a few curve balls, but just a basic interview again. They wanted to get to know you and hear you talk and see how comfortable you are and judge how you’ll be with the customers.
Interviewer: What questions did the interviewer ask during the job interview?
Holiday Inn Front Desk Clerk: There was two. One said, because it was customer service, and it’s not that much of a surprise, but he said in the past – because I had a customer service history – “Give me an example of how you provided excellent customer service?”, and I told a story of when I was working in another hotel about getting a room, just cleaning a room that wasn’t ready to go, but it was the only room we had left, and this person needed a room, so I closed the lobby, went there, and cleaned it myself, and sold that person the room. Then, the other one was: “Where do you see yourself in five years?” As I was a student at that time also, I wasn’t going to be in hospitality, so I didn’t know exactly how to answer. I didn’t want to be in hospitality, since I’m a foreign language major. But, they wanted to know what your idea for the future was, and I answered honestly, and I was hired regardless.
Interviewer: What set you apart from other candidates?
Holiday Inn Front Desk Clerk: I answered the questions quickly, and my experience was legitimate. I generally do like people and like communicating, and we had some laughs during the interview. I think just that level of comfort that I was displaying was appealing, and I think that’s just what kind of stood apart. I was a little nervous right at first, but after a minute it went away, and we actually had a pretty good interview.
Interviewer: What other advice would you give to a job seeker looking to gain employment?
Holiday Inn Front Desk Clerk: Be confident, be happy, be honest. Maybe you don’t want to get hired at every place you interview for, so don’t lie, don’t be deceitful, or try to make yourself look good. Just be who you are, and more times than not you’re probably going to have more luck than trying to impress somebody.

Holiday Inn Front Desk Clerk: I was first the front desk clerk. Then, they moved me to special events assistant. As a front desk clerk, I was answering phones and dealing with customers as they came in, customer service. I also would take in money, and if there’s a situation or problem, I would try to help the customer as best I could. When I switched to special events, I really loved that job. I just really got to help in planning things and kind of helped make sure that all the details were figured out and everything was organized so that the people coming in would have the best experience.
Interviewer: Please describe a typical day as an employee.
Holiday Inn Front Desk Clerk: I would say there’s no typical day, especially at the front desk. We had emergencies a lot, where the lights would go out in the city and we would have all these people. There is no real typical day. You just get done what needs to be done and you help customers in the best way that you can.
Interviewer: How would you describe the application and interview process?
Holiday Inn Front Desk Clerk: The application process was a lot more extensive than the interviews, and they were constantly interviewing you for other positions. After you gain experience, they were constantly asking if you wanted to go work in this department, going to that department, so there are good opportunities. They really wanted people to find people and move them up to find what their skills were and help place them in positions that would best utilize their skills.
Interviewer: What other advice would you give to a job seeker looking to gain employment?
Holiday Inn Front Desk Clerk: To really just take advantage. There are so many positions at the Holiday Inn at such a broad range. Really just take advantage of the fact you have that variety there. Try to see the skills he can build with your position, and then try to move on to another position and see what kind of skills you can acquire there.
