Hollister Floor Model Interview Video

Video Transcript

Interviewer: Please describe your job title and primary duties.
Hollister Floor Model: The job title at the time was model, even thought that didn’t really have to do with the typical model type. But what you did was help customers, you could ring up the register, or you could stand in the front and greet people. Most of the time, you would do one one day and do another a different day. So the majority of the time, you would be ringing on the register or standing in the front greeting people… or helping people and doing customer service.

Interviewer: What was the work environment like?
Hollister Floor Model: The atmosphere with the employees and managers was really laidback, really casual. With the customers, it was a little bit maybe chaotic because you get a lot of them at the same time. So sometimes it’s really loud in there and people don’t know what they’re looking for. So with the customers, it was a little more fast-paced. But with the employees – with the rules and everything – it was really laidback and relaxed.

Interviewer: Please describe a typical day as an employee.
Hollister Floor Model: You clock in, you go in the back, and for me it was everybody knew each other, and everybody got along really well – you spent a lot of time with them, engaging in conversation, and stuff like that. You get your assignment where you’re going to go, where you’ll be stationed, if you have to take over for someone. And you would make sure the room doesn’t look like a mess. If you see any customers, you just say hi to them. If they look like they need help, ask them. If not, you kind of just leave them alone. They just wanted you to make sure you were upbeat and you were in a good mood, so they always ask you that before, too – before you went out on the floor. “Everything going okay? Make sure you’re in a good mood because they don’t want anyone to give like a bad vibe.

Interviewer: How would you describe the application and interview process?
Hollister Floor Model: I had worked for Hollister through Abercrombie & Fitch. So, I was originally working at the Abercrombie & Fitch store, and I didn’t like it as well as I thought. I had been to Hollister before and liked the atmosphere and everything. I asked the other managers if I could switch over. They said, “Yes, just fill out the application and go through the interview process.” The thing with us was a big group interview, and they had them on Wednesdays and Fridays. They would just kind of ask some basic questions and get an idea of the crowd, how the potential employees and workers were. They would just kind of ask you to go around and say your name and something that you like. They’re looking for people that are charismatic and outgoing and kind of stood out. So the first interview would be a big group interview, and if then they called you back, they would have you come back into a group of everyone else they called back. Then, they had you fill out a final application, like more personal information. From there, they would give you a schedule and give you training.

Interviewer: What questions did the interviewer ask during the job interview?
Hollister Floor Model: They would ask you your name. If you were in high school, they ask you what school you went to. If you were in college, they ask you what school you went to, what your major is. They ask you what you like to do for a pastime, or what your interests were, different stuff like that. I didn’t realize this until after I got hired – one of my managers told me – and they actually observed how the group interacted with each other before they actually even started the interview process. They would see who was talking with other people, who was really shy and not talking to anybody, who are some of the others that might tell a joke, just to get an idea of who they are without trying to impress the actual company. So, I thought that was kind of cool.

Interviewer: What other advice would you give to a job seeker looking to gain employment?
Hollister Floor Model: From my experience, just be yourself, and if you have an outgoing personality and stuff doesn’t bother you, you’re easygoing and easy to get along with, you really won’t have a problem because that’s exactly what they’re looking for.

Interviewer: Please describe your job title and primary duties.
Hollister Floor Model: I was a floor model, so basically I worked with customers, and a lot of folding and setting up store with how it should look.

Interviewer: What was the work environment like?
Hollister Floor Model: It was really fun. You were working with people that were your age. Everyone was in high school pretty much, and it was fun. Those people became your friends most of the time, so it was a good time.

Interviewer: What was your favorite part about working there?
Hollister Floor Model: I think just working with people. Again, you got to meet a lot of people that didn’t go to your school, but were in the same grade. I go to school here now with some people I worked with there. Made some lasting relationships.

Interviewer: Please describe a typical day as an employee.
Hollister Floor Model: I think it depends on when you start. If you open, mainly clean the store at the beginning, and when you open, just work with customers and getting ready for that and dealing with them the whole time. We’ll be randomly busy in spurts, but if it’s slow, just fold clothes and have everything set up as neatly as possible. Then closing is just cleaning again.

Interviewer: How would you describe the application and interview process?
Hollister Floor Model: Mine was referred to me, so I had a friend that referred me. I just came in the day of the interview, and I did my application at the same time.

Interviewer: What questions did the interviewer ask during the job interview?
Hollister Floor Model: It was a group interview, so a lot of the things were about how you work with the team, and how you deal with customers, and just how you dealt with certain bad situations, or how to make them positive.

Interviewer: What set you apart from other candidates?
Hollister Floor Model: I think just experiences I’ve had, and being involved with different things, and not just doing nothing throughout high school. I think that helped.

Interviewer: What other advice would you give to a job seeker looking to gain employment?
Hollister Floor Model: I’d say definitely be outgoing in the interview process and try to stand out as much as possible. Just act like you’re really interested.

Interviewer: Please describe your job title and primary duties.
Hollister Model: My job title was a model, so basically I was at the front of the store, so I dealt with all the customers when they came through. If there were no customers in the store, I spent my time folding or fixing up the store.

Interviewer: What was the work environment like?
Hollister Model: The work atmosphere was always laidback. Pretty chilled, you could talk to everyone you wanted to, basically. Customers come in and you have to stay professional, obviously. But, it was still more towards the kids and younger groups.

Interviewer: What was your favorite part about working there?
Hollister Model: My favorite part working at Hollister… well Hollister was a lot of younger kids, so basically having your friends working around all the time, being laid-back, being yourself. You don’t act like anyone else. You could just be yourself and have fun.

Interviewer: Please describe a typical day as an employee.
Hollister Model: Basically my days were just customers, dealing with them and find different styles or T-shirts and jeans. Other than that, when I worked the evening and the store’s about to close. I actually closed a bunch. When the mall actually closes at nine, a lot of the workers stay in after to close up shop. It’s usually you and your crew, about six other people. You fold up the store and make sure everything is back to perfect for the next morning.

Interviewer: How would you describe the application and interview process?
Hollister Model: The application is basic info: your name, which high school you went to, if you were in school. Not really familiar, as I don’t really remember the application, but I do remember the interview process. The interview process was once again laid-back. It was a group interview. Couple of people with you and basically they took turns asking you questions, ask you questions about how you would fit in with Hollister, why you would pick this atmosphere, how do you feel about diversity at Hollister, to a lot of different types of people coming in, like race-wise, ethnicity-wise. They just want to know how you would do under pressure and dealing with customers that aren’t like you.

Interviewer: What set you apart from other candidates?
Hollister Model: They like to hire people that are very outgoing. It’s always been a trait I’ve always had – very outgoing, outspoken, and basically all the things they were looking for, and things like that – because of the different people you deal with, and being in the company. We have to sell something – you have to get going and try to reach out to your customers.

Interviewer: What other advice would you give to a job seeker looking to gain employment?
Hollister Model: Really just be themselves, because Hollister’s the type of job that can be fun for you, and it could be a terrible job – it just depends on who you are. You’ll figure out real fast if it’s for you not for you, so just be yourself and be regular. You don’t have to be over-the-top or something special. Just be yourself.

Interviewer: Please describe your job title and primary duties.
Hollister Floor Model: At Hollister, I was called a model. Model’s not like traditional model, it’s more like a sales associate. So, in the store, I would fold clothes, and greet customers, and ring out customers at the cashier. In addition, I would maintain the store floor and fold clothes. Just make sure the Hollister vibe was in the store, maintaining it like that.

Interviewer: What was the work environment like?
Hollister Floor Model: I thought it was pretty cool. Like I said, Hollister wants to keep it a chilled atmosphere, so workers would talk, but it would be just really relaxed. You would just be there, be friendly with customers, don’t do anything stressful, just do what you gotta do.

Interviewer: Please describe a typical day as an employee.
Hollister Floor Model: When we get in, we have to check with our manager, and she decides where she wants to put us, because we have associates in different parts of the store. So, we get in, and she’ll assign us to some area. So, if I’m assigned to the front of the room, I’ll have to go there, fold clothes, and greet every customer with our tagline. If I was assigned a cashier, I would just ring up customers and keep that going. Those were basically the two things that I would be doing: folding clothes or helping customers up in the front. Then, after that, when your shift is over, you let them know that you’re going to get out, and you leave.

Interviewer: How would you describe the application and interview process?
Hollister Floor Model: The application process… I went to the store, and I talked to the manager. They said to apply online, and to apply online, you need a password, which is why I went to the manager to get that password. Once I got the password, I applied online for a group interview date. So, during that interview date, I think they only hold them Tuesday and Friday. You come in with a bunch of people. She would just ask questions to everyone in the group, and it was like a half an hour interview, and that was it.

Interviewer: What questions did the interviewer ask during the job interview?
Hollister Floor Model: They just asked, “What are you good at?” “What does diversity mean to you?” was a pretty big question. “What would you do to help Hollister?”, “How can Hollister help you?”, and just, “Why do you think this would be a good fit for you?”

Interviewer: What set you apart from other candidates?
Hollister Floor Model: To be honest, I think Hollister was really pushing the diversity thing, and I think they didn’t want to see the average Caucasian blonde person there. They wanted to see Asian, Indian, African American, all different kinds of people working there. So, I think me being a different race helped me a little bit, but they also hire all kinds of people, and someone who’s just hardworking, fun, and wanted to work there.

Interviewer: What other advice would you give to a job seeker looking to gain employment?
Hollister Floor Model: For applying, I would say go and talk to the manager because the manager, once they see you take the initiative to talk to them and try to figure out – not even how to apply, but, “Hi, I want to introduce myself to you, and just talk about this job.” The manager will most likely tend to remember you, like: “Oh yeah, I remember that girl, she came and talked to me. I’ll make sure to look out for her in the interview.” And you just become more familiar, and that could lead you to a job.
