Interviewer: Please describe your job title and primary duties.
Home Depot Department Manager: I was a manager in the furniture department. My tasks there were to make sure the shelves were stocked, make sure everything was nice and neat, make sure it looked nice, make sure the workers were in the area, had appropriate shifts that didn’t conflict with what they had going on elsewhere. We also had to get the furniture down if it was too heavy for a customer to carry. We actually had to get on a machine and get certified for that. We actually had to lift those 100-pound whatever they grab. That’s pretty much the most of what we did. We did do training. We didn’t do the interview process on anyone, but we did do training when they did come in.
Interviewer: What was the work environment like?
Home Depot Department Manager: The work environment was… I came in as a cart boy. I worked real hard, then I worked my way into the lawn and garden area. Then, my hard work there took me into the manager position in the furniture department.
Interviewer: Please describe a typical day as an employee.
Home Depot Department Manager: Typical work day went… you pretty much tried to walk around the store, tried to get people to come to you area, and then once you get them in your area, you can show them a whole bunch of things that they wouldn’t have thought about normally getting, where they’re like “Wow. Okay, that would look nice.” Then you get them thinking that they want to rearrange things. Then from there, you have to get them in the right area now of what they want. First, you get them into what they have. Now, it’s “Okay, what do you want?” as far as what I got you to look at. Then from there, you pretty much have your sale.
Interviewer: What questions did the interviewer ask during the job interview?
Home Depot Department Manager: This was another job where they asked you about your attendance at work, and they asked you, “Are you willing to travel if we moved you to a different store?”, or “What specific area are you good in? Are you good in plants or fixing fences?” They asked you where in the store would be better for you. They also asked if you were certified in anything, like tow motors, forklifts, anything like that. They asked you more along the lines of what skills you had already. You had to have some kind of skill, like a license in driving some kind of vehicle other than a car.
Interviewer: Did you earn any benefits or other job perks?
Home Depot Department Manager: You had 401(k). That was pretty much the big perk. You had a 401(k), but anything else, you were just a regular employee. You had the title where you could just go around more, where if someone saw you and asked, “Why are you outside of your area? Oh, never mind.” But, that was pretty much it.
Interviewer: What other advice would you give to a job seeker looking to gain employment?
Home Depot Department Manager: It’s a great place to grow. You can start out small, then end up working in district. That’s one of those companies where your hard work will definitely pay off.
