Usually 16 to Start
Well-known for offering exceptional employment benefits, great training, and generous discounts, the ever-expanding Starbucks Corporation continuously seeks new employees to fill entry-level barista and shift manager positions. Aspiring workers often ask questions like, “What qualifications do I need to earn hiring consideration at Starbucks?”, “What age does Starbucks hire?”, and “Does Starbucks hire 16 year olds?” Fortunately for young job hopefuls, the specialty coffee retailer sets the minimum employment age at sixteen years old. In Montana and several other states, the cafe chain may hire workers as young as 14 or 15 years of age. Underage associates may need to work limited hours and hold special work permits. After going through a traditional screening process, suitable workers typically receive job offers from store managers by phone, with starting pay resting slightly above minimum wage. On top of hourly wages, baristas and shift managers earn weekly gratuities corresponding with the number of hours worked.

job Requirements
Aside from age restrictions, Starbucks imposes few other essential requirements for hiring consideration. Most entry-level store positions require no formal education certifications or previous experience in the coffee shop industry. However, the coffee retailer may prefer to hire workers with high school diplomas or the equivalent. Though entry-level employment at the coffee shop chain does not necessitate extensive job histories, aspiring workers should possess customer service aptitude as well as the ability to stand on foot for long periods of time and lift up to 40 pounds.

Entry Level Job Opportunities
Entry-level Starbucks jobs requiring little work experience include barista and shift supervisor positions. Upon hire, workers attend several weeks of in-store training in order to pass the barista test. Once trained, baristas work at the cash register or on bar. Cash register duties include greeting customers, taking drink orders, offering helpful suggestions, retrieving pastries or simple drink orders, and operating POS systems. When working on bar, baristas prepare hot and cold specialty drinks to the customer specifications. The corporation strongly encourages baristas to interact with customers while making drinks. Baristas also wash dishes, perform cleaning duties, and ensure work areas remain stocked throughout shifts.

In most cases, the organization prefers to promote management from within and offers hardworking baristas advancement opportunities to take on entry-level shift supervisor roles. Shift supervisors perform similar duties to baristas, with several added responsibilities. Additional tasks include opening and closing stores, placing weekly orders, training new workers, delegating tasks during shifts, and supervising baristas. Shift supervisors must also lead by example and demonstrate positive and customer-focused attitudes.

Hi Lili! Unfortunately the legal working age in the United States requires you to be at least 14 to work. Just hang in there for a little while. I’ve worked as a barista for a little over a year and it has been great. I totally recommend that you apply when you can. 🙂

It looks like you must be at least 16 to work at Starbucks in Florida.

Lili, Starbucks will not hire you at 13. Check the child labor laws for your state to see what kinds of jobs you are eligible to work.
