Straightforward Hiring Practices
IGA promises customers fast, friendly, and knowledgeable service. To fulfill the promise, the grocery store chain hires the brightest and most personable associates possible. Hiring personnel use simple, to-the-point interview processes in order to find valuable workers. For most positions, applicants participate in one face-to-face interview with a hiring manager. The interview usually features basic questions covering willingness to work, thriving in a team environment, and other relevant skills to the job. Interviews often conclude with salary negotiations or job offers. In some cases, jobs are offered several days following the interview.
Entry-Level Jobs
Entry-level IGA store jobs, like cashier and grocery clerk positions, require applicants to participate in a single one-on-one interview with an assistant manager or general manager. Interviews usually play out informally, with applicants given opportunities to talk at length about goal and accomplishments. Some basic questions include: "Tell me about yourself," "Why do you want to work at IGA?", and "Where do you see yourself it five years?" Applicants may also respond to behavioral questions like, "When have you worked as part of a team in order to overcome a challenge?"
Management Jobs
Applicants vying for assistant manager and store manager careers with IGA usually need to participate in several rounds of interviews. District managers typically conduct managerial interviews and begin by asking basic interview questions, like: "What is your leadership experience?" and "What are your strengths and weaknesses?" IGA management job hopefuls may also need to answers situational questions covering customer disputes and improving employee performances.
High Success Rates
A majority of IGA interviews lead to jobs, so applicants should go into interviews with confident outlooks. However, performing well in each interview still remains highly necessary for employment. To ensure a job offer, an applicant needs to show polite and upbeat attitudes from the beginning of each interview until the end the final session. Candidates should smile often, speak with certainty, and exhibit confident postures. Responses to interview questions should demonstrate organization and show commitment to excellent customer care. Applicants should also come to interviews with well-kept appearances and appropriate interview clothing.
IGA Cashier Interview Video
Video Transcript
Interviewer: Please describe your job title and primary duties.
IGA Employee: Well, at IGA I was just a cashier. I would just cash you out when you were done purchasing your groceries.
Interviewer: Please describe a typical day as an employee.
IGA Employee: Well, I would come, clock in, and if I don’t have a drawer at the time, I would see if I could help another cashier or maybe bag their stuff for them. And then, I would see when I’m going to get on the register. I’d get my drawer in and say, “My line is open. Next person.” And that’s it.
Interviewer: How would you describe the application and interview process?
IGA Employee: It was a paper application. I took the application home with me, and then I brought the application back. There was no manager… the hiring manager wasn’t there at the time I took the application back, so I called for a couple weeks until I was finally able to get an interview. Then, they had me come in, and they had my application in front of them, and they asked me, “So, your name is Love Moore?” and “You worked at this many jobs?” and “Why would you want to here?” Stuff like that. It was basic.
Interviewer: What questions did the interviewer ask during the job interview?
IGA Employee: Basically, the same thing… why do I think I would be a good candidate to work here. Just the routine process they do when they interview you. Tell me a little bit about yourself, your work history, and that’s basically it.
Interviewer: What other advice would you give to a job seeker looking to gain employment?
IGA Employee: Just be willing to work hard, and if you put in one application and don’t hear nothing, just keep trying until they call you… eventually they’ll call you. It might not be when you want it, but just keep on trying. That’s all I can say. Just never give up. Just keep trying.
IGA Stock Clerk Interview Video
Video Transcript
Interviewer: Please describe your job title and primary duties.
IGA Stock Clerk: At IGA, I worked in the back sorting out fruits, vegetables, stuff like that. Then if I didn’t have that much to do back there, I would go up to the front and help bag or stock, mop, clean, basic duties.
Interviewer: What was your favorite part about working there?
IGA Stock Clerk: The people. My coworkers and the people that shopped there. I got to know a lot of people that came in. I knew what they wanted. I knew what they were liked. If they changed the aisle around, where they were used to picking up a product, I would show them where we had put it. Other than that, just the environment, period.
Interviewer: Please describe a typical day as an employee.
IGA Stock Clerk: I was the one that opened up shop every morning, so I would come in and open up, unlock the door, then hit the alarm, turn it off, then put some coffee in the employee hangout room, then I started doing my duties. Started working – sorting out things, checking the bathroom to make sure it was clean, and stuff like that.
Interviewer: How would you describe the application and interview process?
IGA Stock Clerk: Basic application, as always. Put down your work experience, have you ever been convicted of a felony, basic stuff. As a matter of fact, I filled out the application right there, and the young lady interviewed me right there on the spot and hired me.
Interviewer: What questions did the interviewer ask during the job interview?
IGA Stock Clerk: References. You had to have about three references. She gave them calls and stuff like that. Next thing I know, I was part of the team.
Interviewer: What other advice would you give to a job seeker looking to gain employment?
IGA Stock Clerk: IGAs are family-owned. I would advise them to go and try to get a job there – basically youngsters that are in high school – to get some work experience. I would really advise something like that, because a lot of these old people, middle-aged… they do work, but they probably only want a couple hours. Other than that, I’d really push the young people to get in there and get a job. Give them as much work experience as you can give them.
