Interviewer: Please describe your job title and primary duties.
In-N-Out Burger Employee: I started out as a cashier and just worked on the register. My duties were to make sure the lobby area was clean and process orders. Then, I eventually moved to becoming a cook there. The basic jobs of a cook were just to grill the burgers, assemble the burgers, put them all together.

Interviewer: What was the work environment like?
In-N-Out Burger Employee: The work environment was very fast-paced, very exciting, because it almost felt like a high school environment. It was a lot of young, energetic people that kept you up with your duties and on top of it. You learned to be efficient while getting things done on a timely manner without wasting any time.

Interviewer: How would you describe the application and interview process?
In-N-Out Burger Employee: The application was pretty much a simple job application, asking about your previous experience, traits that would make you qualified. They didn’t really look for much previous experience, just more if you had energy and drive to work in a place like In-N-Out, because most of the people that work there, it was their first job, as well. They definitely got you prepared for the job.

Interviewer: What set you apart from other candidates?
In-N-Out Burger Employee: What might have set me apart is I was highly active in sports during high school and that might have attributed to me always being on top of things, being alert, being able to stand on my feet for three, four, five hours straight in shifts, while maybe some people might not have been to do those kind of jobs. But other than that, it was also maybe character, willingness to learn the In-N-Out system that also set me apart than most people.

Interviewer: What other advice would you give to a job seeker looking to gain employment?
In-N-Out Burger Employee: I’d recommend for anyone who’s in their teens or even someone who’s active or wants to be a bit more active to definitely check out In-N-Out, because In-N-Out gives you that family feel, because you become part of a team, and each of you is doing a specific job at a time, where you need to be fast-paced, efficient, and it really tells you how to manage your time in a way. So, it’s a really exciting experience for a young person. Definitely should check it out, if they’re looking for a job like at In-N-Out.

Interviewer: Please describe your job title and primary duties.
In-N-Out Burger Associate: I don’t recall exactly my job title, but it’s the same job title that everybody has who work in the kitchen. It’s a fast food restaurant. I believe it was an associate; I think that’s what they call it.

Interviewer: What was the work environment like?
In-N-Out Burger Associate: It’s like working at any fast food joint. You have to… there’s a rotation. If you start off in potatoes, you probably get switched to dishwasher. They train you in every single capacity that exists in the restaurant, from dishwasher, cutting potatoes, frying potatoes, taking orders from the drive-thru, taking orders in the front. They rotate you so you can learn all the job qualities there. That way, if one person is missing, you know how to do every single job there.

Interviewer: How would you describe the application and interview process?
In-N-Out Burger Associate: It was interesting, because actually there was a new restaurant opening about where I lived. So, it was a job fair. I went in there with my resume, and I had a group interview right there on the spot. It was beneficial for me, because they were really looking to hire that day. Not only did I have my interview that day, but I was hired that day. I guess the only thing, for me it wasn’t intimidating, but maybe for other people it was intimidating. It was a group interview. There was five people on the table, and it was just by myself. That was the interview process, and I applied. Once I got hired, I had to go to training through In-N-Out.

The sweet thing about In-N-Out is that when you get hired, I think what definitely that sets them apart is that they have a day where you could bring your family, and you can have a free meal. They explain to you about the history of In-N-Out. It’s like a family-owned business, so they try to create that environment.

Interviewer: What questions did the interviewer ask during the job interview?
In-N-Out Burger Associate: They asked me about my work experience. They asked me about my qualities, about my weaknesses and of course about my strengths. Those are some of the questions that they asked.

Interviewer: What other advice would you give to a job seeker looking to gain employment?
In-N-Out Burger Associate: I think be consistent, even if you’re told no. There are no spaces available, be consistent. Apply online, but I will highly suggest go in person. I realize that not everybody is going to through the same interview process I went through, because it was a job fair for a new restaurant, but for restaurants that are already open, apply and I think you should go personally to the restaurant. Be consistent about the fact that you want to work there.

In-N-Out is different than other fast food restaurants. You got to do the same job. You’re going to be fast-paced. You’re going to do a million things at once at some point. At the same time, you have to priority customer service. But, I think it’s worth it in the pay, because their pay rate is higher than the other fast food restaurants. I remember we started off at $10.00 an hour. In four months I was given $0.25 raise, so it went to $10.25. It definitely has those incentives once you’re in there. Just be consistent, be confident. You have to be a people person. If you’re shy, you’re going to have to shed that fear. But, one main thing is be consistent and don’t give up, even if when they say no.

    Just got done with my 3rd In N Out interview 3 hours ago, I got the job and start in 2 weeks. Im 16 years old. Some tips-
    -Don’t overdress, dress nicely as if you would to impress your girlfriend/boyfriend. (No sportswear e.g tanktop.)
    -Be calm and talk to your interviewer as if it’s your Teacher.
    -A lot of my questions involved ME and my futuristic plans, (Plans after highschool, sports, hobbies, interests)
    -BIG TIP, the first question out of all three interviews was “WHY IN N OUT”
    -Try to have good diction and syntax, dont be parsimonious with your word usage.

    don’t wear acrylic nails or polish
    keep a smile on your face
    try not to say uhm
    keep eye contact when talking
    don’t overdress but don’t dress too casual
    stay positive
    if you have gauged ears make sure you take them out beforehand!
    don’t talk to your interviewer like they’re just one of your friends!
    use proper English!
