Many Positions Stand Available
Jos. A. Bank conducts a very simple interview process, which screens candidates for commission-based sales and managerial positions. Job openings are listed and regularly updated on the company website. Applicants often receive job offers on-the-spot when applying for open positions, as the retailer experiences a steady turnover rate consistent with the fashion retail industry.
Arrive on Time and Prepared
Attend each interview in business-formal attire and arrive with time to mentally prepare for the meeting. During each interview, job seekers desiring work at the national clothing retailer answer questions about work history, availability, ethics, and customer service skills. Jos. A. Bank store managers typically conduct hiring meetings in-store. Applicants should arrive prepared to converse with the hiring representative for an hour or so.
Typical Questions
Hiring representatives often commence Jos. A. Bank interviews by asking behavioral questions like, "Have you ever been in a situation where a customer asked you to bend the rules or break company policy?" Applicants should respond honestly and keep customer satisfaction and the success of the establishment at the forefront of replies. Other questions may include:
- "Do you have any previous retail experience?"
- "Can you work some weekends and holidays?"
- "Can you tell me about a time when you went above and beyond to make sure a customer felt cared for?"
How to Wrap up the Interview
Thank Jos. A. Bank hiring representatives for the time to interview and express desire for the position when given the opportunity. If not hired on the spot, follow up with recruitment personnel a few days after the interview to ask about hiring status and reiterate interest in the job.

Video Transcript
Interviewer: Please describe your job title and primary duties.
JoS A. Bank Sales Associate: I was a sales associate at Jos. A. Bank and basically what I did was, I would come in and I would help customers out. I did a lot of customer service. It was mainly a suit environment, so I would sell mostly suits. I believe when I started, I was a 5% commission. What we made was $8.50/hour, $8.25/hour, but you’d usually start off with $8.50/hour. Every week, I’d sell suits or sell items. I also worked the cashier register. That’s basically what we’d do. When new shipments come in, we also stock up new shipments and stuff like that.
Interviewer: What was the work environment like?
JoS A. Bank Sales Associate: It’s a very calm work environment on most days. I would say Monday through Wednesdays is a calm work environment. When it gets down to Thursdays and Fridays, it becomes a little busy, because people are leaving or buying new suits or need suits for their children. It gets a little busy, but it’s a very calm work environment.
Interviewer: How would you describe the application and interview process?
JoS A. Bank Sales Associate: The application process is online. You answer a couple of questions. Once you do the application process online, the manager or assistant manager will call you for an interview. My interview, I had a full two piece suit on. That is the requirement. Basically, they ask you questions about your experience in retail and what not. It’s a pretty smooth application process.
Interviewer: What questions did the interviewer ask during the job interview?
JoS A. Bank Sales Associate: I remember, she asked me questions like my experience, how long I’d been in retail, or did I have any experience selling clothes or items and stuff like that. How well do I work with other associates? Am I a good team worker? Am I a good leader? Can I learn things fast? Stuff like that.
Interviewer: How were you notified that you received the job?
JoS A. Bank Sales Associate: I remember the first day, when she finished interviewing me, she didn’t tell me I had the job yet. It took two days to notify me. She called me and told me that I had the job and I came in and began to start my training and what not.
Interviewer: What other advice would you give to a job seeker looking to gain employment?
JoS A. Bank Sales Associate: Basically, have a very good resume. It’s always good to have experience and also, it’s very good to have a network or connections with other people that have higher positions that could recommend you to the job.
kyle Simmons says:
Chad: I had my interview today and we talked about pay near the end for a sales associate, it is either 8 dollars an hour OR 5% commission. Which ever one you make more of; ex. 20 hours: $160 before taxes, $1,000 in sales: $50. Obviously you’d want the hourly pay for that particular week.
