Interviewer: Please describe your job title and primary duties.
Kay Jewelers Sales Associate: I was a sales associate, I believe it is, or was my title. My duties were to get the store organized when you walk in, make sure that it’s presentable, talk to customers and then after closing hours, clean the floors again and take all the jewelry to the back and store it so that it wasn’t in the displays.
Interviewer: What was the work environment like?
Kay Jewelers Sales Associate: Very calm and easygoing in terms of people come in and you greet them. You make causal conversations and you show the product. To me, it was a very nice environment, you know, soft music in the background as well.
Interviewer: How would you describe the application and interview process?
Kay Jewelers Sales Associate: I went in one day and asked if they were hiring because I had hired from an associate who was there, a friend of mine. I went in, I got the application form, then I came back and they asked me an extensive amount of questions about what kind of other jobs I had, how long they were, because they take that into consideration. They do a credit check too — very interesting. That was about it, and how flexible I was.
Interviewer: What should an applicant wear to the interview?
Kay Jewelers Sales Associate: Very professional, business. For women, primarily I wouldn’t say a dress unless you’ve got a nice jacket over it. Flats are technically okay. They have to closed toe shoes all the time. A little heel is nice.
Interviewer: How were you notified that you received the job?
Kay Jewelers Sales Associate: I got a letter, I believe, and I got a phone call and then I went in the next day and started working.
Interviewer: What other advice would you give to a job seeker looking to gain employment?
Kay Jewelers Sales Associate: My advice is to have patience. You’re not going to get a lot of customers at the very beginning. Like any sales job, it’s based on how much you sell which is the reason that I didn’t like it. The more personable you are with your customers, the more they’ll probably come back. That’s the one thing that I really did learn from that job was constantly making conversations, be invested in your customers because they’ll definitely make a buy actually.
