Video Transcript
Interviewer: Please describe your job title and primary duties.
Kmart Cashier: So basically it was just the role of a cashier. So just your basic checkout necessities, checking people out, counting money, giving change back, interacting with customers. You know, occasionally they come to the register and they forget something and you have to let them know where it is in a store and how to get there quickly so that the line doesn’t be held up.
Interviewer: What was the work environment like?
Kmart Cashier: It was pretty nice and it was kind of laid back but not too laid back, if that makes sense. The staff wasn’t over your shoulder every second, do this, do that and make sure this gets done. It was just more so you knew what you had to get done before the end, before the end of your shift, and so you just did what you needed to do before you clocked out for the day.
Interviewer: What was your favorite part about working there?
Kmart Cashier: Customers. I enjoy being around other people. Sometimes they may not seem like it, but I really do. So it’s just being in the presence of other people and helping you finish your shopping experience off the right way.
Interviewer: Please describe the application and interview process.
Kmart Cashier: I filled out my application online, so I don’t know if it’s different for, if you fill it out to paper form, you would think that it’s the same process though. So basically I just filled out an application online. Once the application was submitted, they message you, well not message you but email you as to if they want you to come in for an interview and if you don’t get an email then they probably weren’t interested. But I got an email back from them asking to schedule an interview. I scheduled my interview and when I went in, it was a group interview, so it was me and two other girls that were being hired for the same position. So we all got the same interview, the same rules were told to all of us. We all filled out the same paperwork and then they had us go on a tour of the store.
So basically behind the scenes, what was what, behind the chemical spill cleanups and how we go about doing that. If we ever had to clean up a chemical or something, we just went through like the back, behind the scenes or the store and then we went out on the floor to know, these are the people from the back room and this is where they work. And then these are the fresh food associates and this is what they do. Then these are clothing and apparel associates and this is what they do. And so after that they basically just asked us when we wanted to start and from there they gave us schedules and luckily all three of us got hired in. So it wasn’t much of a, oh this is your competition, you have to out shine them or anything. It was more so comfortable and just everybody did their own thing.
Interviewer: What questions did the interviewer ask during the job interview?
Kmart Cashier: So it wasn’t really questions, it was more so of discussions. They will show videos of how a day would be in the a company kind of a deal. They did ask us simple things like how do you do with a customers, how do you work with other people and stuff like that. Just the basic things that you would ask somebody who wants to interact with other people. So they asked like, I think that they asked us to name a time where we were in a situation that we had to put our emotions to the side and be professional. So basically a time you had to problem-solve without using emotions is how I took it. Just stuff like that.
Interviewer: How were you notified that you received the job?
Kmart Cashier: After the interview, it was about a week later at the most, I don’t remember exact, but I think it was a week at the most that they emailed me and I got a call too because I didn’t respond to the email. I didn’t see it. And so they called me as well and just basically told me, we want you and you guys did nice in your interview. We want you here your hired. When can you start kind of a deal.
Interviewer: What other advice would you give to a job seeker looking to gain employment?
Kmart Cashier: Be yourself. That’s all I can think of. Honestly. That’s all I did was just be myself. I didn’t try to overdo the interview. Like if I’m just a normal laid back person, I didn’t go in there trying to be … just be yourself. Because I feel like if they hire you for pretending to be someone else, you have to keep that facade going the whole time you work there. So just be yourself. Let them know up front what hours you’re willing to work and just make sure everything is laid out up front as to what you expect and what you want in return kind of a deal.

Interviewer: Please describe your job title and primary duties.
Kmart Cashier: I worked as a cashier, basically. My daily duties were to stand at the register and check people out, check their material out. Whenever it was slow, we would take the things people didn’t want, take those back and re-shelf them. That was pretty much my duties at Kmart. I worked there for about four months.
Interviewer: What was the work environment like?
Kmart Cashier: It was a very friendly work environment. A lot of the people I worked with were… there were a lot of older ladies and there were a lot of high school age students, so there was a great variety in age groups with the people I worked with. But, they were all really kind and I think they had good customer service, not only with customers but with the employees, as well.
Interviewer: Please describe a typical day as an employee.
Kmart Cashier: A typical work day a Kmart would be just checking customers out, daily interactions with customers, being able to answer questions, point them in the right direction. You meet a lot of new people by just being a cashier.
Interviewer: How would you describe the application and interview process?
Kmart Cashier: The application for Kmart was actually online, and I got a call a couple days later asking to set up an interview. When I got to my interview, she just asked me if I had retail experience before Kmart, had I had any customer experience, how I got along with others. She asked me some questions about my strengths and weaknesses, how I deal with conflicts. Working in customer service, you come in contact with a lot of conflict.
Interviewer: What set you apart from other candidates?
Kmart Cashier: I think my confidence and self-assurance helped to get that position. I was able to go in and answer the questions pretty quickly but also with a lot of thought. So, I think being sure of yourself… being sure of what I thought I would get out of the job was very important in me being able to answer questions correctly. And giving off a positive, welcoming aura also helped.
Interviewer: What other advice would you give to a job seeker looking to gain employment?
Kmart Cashier: I would just tell someone looking to work for Kmart to just be confident and go in with your head held high. But don’t be too confident, and you should do just fine. It wasn’t too hard of a process, and usually the people that I worked with were very inviting. And it was a very comfortable setting.

Interviewer: Please describe your job title and primary duties.
Kmart Cashier: I was a cashier and stock – handled obviously all customer issues that would come in, like the toy store area. If I was in electronics, I would stock the electronics and check them out, as well.
Interviewer: What was the work environment like?
Kmart Cashier: It could be high-stressful, depending on what time of year it is. The electronics department is very high-theft, and you also in a way have to be a part of loss prevention to keep the stuff from walking out the door.
Interviewer: Please describe a typical day as an employee.
Kmart Cashier: Typical day, you would come in, clock in, get your bag, which had your money in it for your drawer, take it to the back, count it to make sure it’s accurate. Then, you would report to your area a couple minutes before your shift, so they could pull their drawer, count it, and then you could put yours in.
Interviewer: How would you describe the application and interview process?
Kmart Cashier: The application and interview process… for the application – for that one – they do a background check, they did very basic math questions, a couple story problems, just to make sure you could add and subtract in your head – little stuff. That was pretty much that for them. It wasn’t a long application process with them.
Interviewer: What questions did the interviewer ask during the job interview?
Kmart Cashier: Basics: what type of background you have, what makes you want to work for them, why did you choose them, what your availability was, are you willing to work for them, will you work on Sundays; because at the time, people didn’t want to work Sundays. It was very basic with them.
Interviewer: What other advice would you give to a job seeker looking to gain employment?
Kmart Cashier: Just be willing to work with them. When they call you in, go in. If you need more hours, communicate with them and ask them. Say, “If somebody calls off, call me in.” Show a willingness to want to be there.
