Interviewer: Please describe your job title and primary duties.
Kohl’s Cashier: I was a cashier, and pretty much I did customer service, had to ring people out, answer phones, do returns, stand behind a register.
Interviewer: What was the work environment like?
Kohl’s Cashier: It was pretty slow. All the people I worked with were nice, and the managers were awesome. It was a new store, and it was really small compared to the other ones, so there wasn’t too much business there. But when we were busy, it was kind of fast paced. It was alright.
Interviewer: What was your favorite part about working there?
Kohl’s Cashier: The discount. We get 15% off on top of sale and clearance and coupons, so that was nice.
Interviewer: Please describe a typical day as an employee.
Kohl’s Cashier: Come in, clock in, go to your register, count your drawer, make sure it’s even, just start ringing people out. Then when you’re finished, you didn’t have to count your register to make sure it was even. You just logged off and left. It was pretty simple.
Interviewer: How would you describe the application and interview process?
Kohl’s Cashier: I’d seen that they were hiring online. The store hadn’t actually been finished yet, so they were doing interviews at a Sheraton hotel in Cuyahoga Falls. So, I went there, and it was a big room like this one is – a big group interview – and they just went around the room and asked questions. They called me about two weeks later and told me over the phone that I had the job.
Interviewer: What questions did the interviewer ask during the job interview?
Kohl’s Cashier: The basic stuff, like: “Where have you worked before?”, “What’s your availability like?” Then, they would ask scenario questions, like: “If this happened with a customer, what would you do?” They would ask if you’d ever been awarded or recognized at school or in another job and stuff like that.
Interviewer: What set you apart from the other candidates?
Kohl’s Cashier: I think a big part of it was one of the managers. I worked for her husband at a different store, so she kind of knew who I was. She knew that I was a good worker. I had received a couple of awards with loss prevention and stuff with another store and another job. I think that really hit them at home, or whatever, because at Kohl’s, people like to steal a lot. I think they liked that.
Interviewer: What other advice would you give to a job seeker looking to gain employment?
Kohl’s Cashier: Be good at sales. You really have to sell those Kohl’s charges. You have to know what you’re talking about, how to get people to sign up for them. Or else, they don’t like it if you don’t get Kohl’s charges.
