How to Get a Job at Kohl's
Kohl's, one of the largest department store chains in the United States, regularly provides employment opportunities in various departments. Jobs exist in retail, distribution centers, and customer service. Following submission of the necessary information, hiring managers routinely contact eligible job hopefuls for an interview.
Format of Interviews
Usually administered by a store manager, interview sessions take on several formats, including one-on-one question and answer sessions or group events, with several applicants interviewing at once. Sometimes, an additional interview conducted by a department manager follows initial store encounters. Kohl's job interviews typically operate in open-forum fashion, where applicants may ask questions about working for the company.
- Can you work weekends?
- Do you work better with others or alone?
- Describe your work style.
- What annoys you?
- Can you speak any other languages?
Dress Appropriately
Attitude, personality, and presentation go a long way for Kohl's applicants. Since clothing stands as one of the most popular commodities sold by the retail chain, applicants should dress appropriately. A business or corporate-influenced wardrobe may prove the best option for prospects, including slacks, dress skirts, dresses, collared shirts, conservative blouses, neck ties, and even full business suits remain acceptable for any position.
Social Skills
As Kohl's relies on exceptional customer service, new hires must feel comfortable in a heavily social setting where employees interact with hundreds of different personalities every day. Social skills must easily come out during the interview process, along with suitable body language and professional behavior.
Job Offers
With more than 1,500 stores operating in the United States, each Kohl's location may use a different format regarding contact on employment. Most often, Kohl's managers call successful applicants to set up the first day of employment. An accompanying email may be used, as well. Interviewees may call or write the store and ask about hiring status. However, candidates should wait until after the interview and ask if they are allowed to contact Kohl's personnel.
Kohl’s Store Associate Interview Video
Video Transcript
Interviewer: Please describe your job title and primary duties.
Kohl’s Employee: I was a bagger for holiday time. I tried to get in as a cashier, but they were just looking for baggers at the time.
Interviewer: What was the work environment like?
Kohl’s Employee: It was really busy, especially for Christmas and Black Friday. People were acting pretty crazy. I had never went through that before. It was my first retail job. I had worked at McDonald’s before, but I had never dealt with people like that.
Interviewer: What was your favorite part about working there?
Kohl’s Employee: Probably the other employees. Getting along with other people, seeing how customers and certain people react to certain things.
Interviewer: How would you describe the application and interview process?
Kohl’s Employee: I didn’t really get an interview. My mom worked there, and they were just looking for baggers, so my mom signed me up. And the boss called me and said, “Your mom told me about you,” and just asked me a few questions about what I had done in the past. I started the next day.
Interviewer: what other advice would you give to a job seeker looking for employment?
Kohl’s Employee: Dress nicely, don’t talk back, and just be mature about it.
