How to Land an Interview
Applicants generally gain interview consideration with Kumon Learning Centers through one of three ways: employee referral, online, or via college fairs.
Overall Time Frame
Once reviewed by hiring personnel, candidates participate in fairly simple procedures to gain employment. The worldwide chain of tutoring centers holds no formal protocol for onboarding new employees. Applicants typically sit through a single interview with a branch manager to determine eligibility. The Kumon hiring process takes anywhere from a single day and up to two weeks to complete. The only intensive portions of the interview process include assessments to gauge knowledge in applicable fields, like math, science, language arts, and social studies.
The conversations held between job hopefuls and managers remain relatively light and touch on various subjects like education and professional motivations. The tutoring chain asks applicants very basic interview questions like:
- Why do you want to work with children?
- What made you decide on Kumon?
- What ages of children have you worked with in the past?
Additional Interview ConsiderationsApplicants may also need to list skills and abilities related to the position desired, as well as provide examples of work performance from previous jobs or relate real-life experiences to tutoring in professional settings. Writing and comprehension skills prove desirable qualities, as well. Interviewers may also broach the subject of availability.
The professional requirements of most available jobs dictate dress codes for Kumon job seekers. Workers should wear office-formal attire and display clean, well-kempt appearances. Interviewer: Please describe your job title and primary duties.
Kumon Employee: Basically, I was in advanced math and reading tutor. I was doing a lot of helping students with any of the worksheets that we provided for them. I also graded their worksheets.
Interviewer: Please describe a typical day as an employee.
Kumon Employee: My typical day would be for me to come in, get myself organized, and then have all the students come in and give their worksheets, start grading their homework, and then if they had any questions then I would answer them.
Interviewer: How would you describe the application and interview process?
Kumon Employee: I actually heard of it by one of my friends, and so when I went there and asked if they were hiring, they said, “Yeah.” And so, I got an application, just a general application. Then, they interviewed me I think a couple days afterward, but then there was also a test involved to make sure that you were competent in the math and reading abilities.
Interviewer: What questions did the interviewer ask during the job interview?
Kumon Employee: I think one of the bigger questions were, “Why do you want this job and how can you apply it to your future?” And then your strengths and weaknesses. It was pretty general.
Interviewer: What set you apart from other candidates?
Kumon Employee: I think part of it was the fact that we did have an assessment test. They for the most part got everybody, but I guess if you scored at a lower than average, then they probably wouldn’t hire you.
Interviewer: What other advice would you give to a job seeker looking to gain employment?
Kumon Employee: I think they have to have a lot of patience, because you’re dealing with kids from like ages five to 13, and so there’s different temperaments.
