Interviewer: Please describe your job title and primary duties.
Michaels Cashier: I was a cashier. I worked there when I was about 16. My job duties were to handle the cash register, to work some back inventory, to stock shelves, to help customers.

Interviewer: What was the work environment like?
Michaels Cashier: Well, at times it was kind of quick-paced, depending on sort of the time of season. Holidays would get pretty busy. Other than that, it was sort of a… you were on the floor dealing with customers, you’re dealing with your colleagues, and so it was pretty quick-paced.

Interviewer: Please describe a typical day as an employee.
Michaels Cashier: A typical day, I would come in, I would either work the cash register from kind of the get-go, like count the till and just begin to interact with customers as they had items to check out. In between that, I might go out onto the floor, just kind of be of service to customers sometimes. I had a section that I was in charge of. It was boxes and frames, and so I would make sure that that area was stocked all the time, that it wasn’t messy and just kind of stood around that area to make sure that customers… I answered questions, basically.

Interviewer: How would you describe the application and interview process?
Michaels Cashier: This was before online job applications were really popular. Basically, it was like a job that I just came in, I asked for an application, and it was a two-page form. They had me fill it out, and then they called me within a couple of days, and I had a 30-minute interview.

Interviewer: What questions did the interviewer ask during the job interview?
Michaels Cashier: They asked me to talk about why I was interested in the job, what previous experience I had, how I could deal with difficult situations with customers, how I would deal with problem-solving on my feet, how I would deal with authority. I think those were main questions.

Interviewer: What other advice would you give to a job seeker looking to gain employment?
Michaels Cashier: I would emphasize really willingness to be quick on your feet, to learn a wide range of duties, whatever is kind of asked of you, to be willing to just jump in and take responsibility. For example, if you’re given a new duty of stocking or a new duty of just interacting with customers to be really… to hone in on your customer service skills, to be friendly and sort of respectful of customers and their wishes. I think being able to handle large set of responsibilities within a short amount of time is helpful and just being willing to kind of jump in and be quick on your feet.
