Interviewer: Please describe your job title and primary duties.
Michaels Employee: I was the custom framer, and I basically would measure customers’ prints or pictures and archive them.

Interviewer: Please describe a typical day as an employee.
Michaels Employee: Start the day by helping out customers if they didn’t need help with pictures, and I would help sell frames. Whenever they brought in like canvas or ordered a shadow box, I would help them measure it and pick out the wood frame and the glass that went over it and the tapes and everything.

Interviewer: How would you describe the application and interview process?
Michaels Employee: It was pretty basic. I just interviewed with the manager and she called me back right away.

Interviewer: What questions did the interviewer ask during the job interview?
Michaels Employee: If I had ever worked with art supplies, and being a creative person, I told them I did.

Interviewer: What set you apart from other candidates?
Michaels Employee: Probably because I have been a photographer all my life. I have done custom framing myself.

Interviewer: What other advice would you give to a job seeker looking to gain employment?
Michaels Employee: Brush up on your art supplies knowledge and all the frames – if they’re wood frames and tempered glass – and archival tape, and so on

Interviewer: Please describe your job title and primary duties.
Michaels Sales Associate: Initially, I was hired as a cashier, however, after the seasonal period, around Christmastime, we had an abundance of cashiers so I was moved to the floor. I kind of became a salesperson, directing people to items they needed and helping them find stuff.

Interviewer: What was the work environment like?
Michaels Sales Associate: I really enjoyed working where I did. I don’t know how it is for other branches, however, the branch I worked at the managers were really supportive, helpful. I was playing soccer at the time and going to school, I was a high school student, so they definitely worked with me to make sure that the hours I was working were good for me. They were really flexible. If something came up, they were definitely there to help me. My co-workers were nice people as well, so I enjoyed it.

Interviewer: How would you describe the application and interview process?
Michaels Sales Associate: I was referred by a friend. I had a friend who worked at Michael’s so they told me to go online and see if there was any positions available. I went online, went to their website. The application took me about 30 minutes. After that I was called about a week later by the manager and had an interview. That lasted about 20, 30 minutes and I was hired on the spot.

Interviewer: What set you apart from other candidates?
Michaels Sales Associate: I would like to say I have really good work ethic, and I’d like to say I’m usually someone, being a cashier or whatever, I think you have to be someone who can deal with other people and things and kind of be a relatable person. I would like to say I’m good with people as well as I have good work ethic.

    Five years ago I had an interview with Jenny at the Michaels store in Saint John NB. There were lots of questions, most of them situational, such as “did you ever have to handle an irate customer in past jobs , If so how was the situation controlled and was the outcome successful for both parties involved”? There were questions about making crafts, customer interations, and if there where any situations when someone was injured or taken ill. One of my seasonal jobs was located at the Fundy Trail Parkway. There were hiking trails, cycling as well as a motorway so the chance of injuries was always present. At the end of my interview, Jenny stated she enjoyed the interview and said it was one of the best she had participated in. Which was a nice compliment.
