Interviewer: Please describe your job title and primary duties.
Ralph Lauren Sales Associate: My title was sales associate. My primary duties were customer service and I would take care of the back section also. Replenishment and sometimes I was in the cashier but that was not my job.

Interviewer: Please describe a typical day as an employee.
Ralph Lauren Sales Associate: I would come in, punch in and then the manager would give me a list of the things that I will have to do. Let’s say that day we had a goal, I’d have to memorize it just in case the manager of my manager would come in and ask us, what would be the goal for that day. Then once in a while every month we would have to go around the store and see if we were missing stuff, like merchandise and stuff like that. That will be my daily routine. Oh, and welcome every customer that comes to the store.

Interviewer: How would you describe the application and interview process?
Ralph Lauren Sales Associate: It was around fall period so I would just walked in the store. A friend of mine told me, “Oh, they’re hiring.” I just walked in, talked to the manager and the manager said, “Sure, here’s the application, can fill it and bring it back.” Then a week later they called me they said I had good references. They called them and said you’re reliable, so we want you to work with us.

Interviewer: What questions did the interviewer ask during the job interview?
Ralph Lauren Sales Associate: They asked about my goals in life, my grades, if I was a volunteer anywhere. Later on I found out after the interview that they asked the same question just to find out if I would be lying or not. That was a really big thing with them. They said if you were to lie with us, we would not want you even though you had good references because we don’t want nobody that’s not trustworthy. That was the main, a really good let’s say priority with them, loyalty to the store.

Interviewer: What should an applicant wear to the interview?
Ralph Lauren Sales Associate: I waited about a week and I received a call from the manager. I was in class at the time. They left me a message saying that they wanted me to come in and fill in the paperwork and start working with them.

Interviewer: What other advice would you give to a job seeker looking to gain employment?
Ralph Lauren Sales Associate: I would say go for it. It’s not that hard, especially if you’re in college.

Interviewer: Please describe your job title and primary duties.
Ralph Lauren Cashier: I was a lead cashier at Ralph Lauren. I started off just ringing people up and telling them about promotions, stuff like that. After a few months, I progressed to training new employees and I became a cash lead. I was promoted to cash lead, so I would train all of the new employees and kind of be on top of letting the employees know about new promotions. We had new things that happen every week, goals, things like that so I was responsible in making sure that they were aware of those things. Then, if I was opening or closing, depending on which one, I would have to either count the registers to $200 each or at night count all of the extra cash and put it in deposit bags and put it in the safe.

Interviewer: What was the work environment like?
Ralph Lauren Cashier: With my co-workers and my bosses, it was great. There was a lot of people, it was their first job, so that was kind of difficult trying to coach them and stuff like that. As far as the customers went, there were a lot of very rude customers but I think that goes for any retail job, in my opinion. We had a lot of foreign people that would come and shop there and a lot of them didn’t speak really good English, so there’s a big language barrier. It caused a lot of confusion and frustration and made things tense at times. Other than that, I enjoyed it.

Interviewer: How would you describe the application and interview process?
Ralph Lauren Cashier: Just showing up, I’d recommend bringing a resume with you to any job but I showed up with my resume, asked to speak to a hiring manager who was working at the time. Then they asked me to fill out a job application. It was like three or four pages long. Nothing special about the job application, just references, where I worked before, where I live, things of that nature. They ran a background check. Then they told me they were going to follow-up with a phone call with me in the next few days. They never followed up with me and I called them to ask about my application and they just said they were swamped with applications so they weren’t able to get to all of them but they did gladly set me up with an interview. I showed up. I think it was about a two hour interview. They typically did group interviews but I was able to get a one-on-one interview which I liked.

Interviewer: What questions did the interviewer ask during the job interview?
Ralph Lauren Cashier: I remember they asked about your people skills, like how are your people skills or how good are you with people. They always ask if you’re bi-lingual. They wanted bi-lingual people working there. “Where do you see yourself in five years?” I think that was one of them.

Interviewer: How were you notified that you received the job?
Ralph Lauren Cashier: They told me at the end of the interview. Then they also did a follow-up phone call to ask me when I wanted to come in for training. He did tell me I was hired on the spot.

Interviewer: What other advice would you give to a job seeker looking to gain employment?
Ralph Lauren Cashier: Make sure you have a lot of patience to work with the customers, but it’s rewarding when you can really help out the customers and get them what they want. I don’t know. Just have fun with it. You get to dress up in Polo clothes because you have to dress for Polo for your workplace, that’s a lot of fun. I think that’s one of the best parts of it. I guess just have patience with the customers and have fun with your job. The management was great. It was really wonderful.
