Beginning the Hiring Process

Rooms To Go is known for providing exceptional customer care. To carry on its good reputation, the furniture retailer hires helpful workers with ample knowledge of the furniture industry. Entry-Level Interviews

Customer service and sales associate jobs typically require applicants to particle in one face-to-face interview. Interviews are held in-store by hiring managers and typically last between 20 and 45 minutes. Interviewers typically start by asking basic questions, such as:

Interviewer: Please describe your job title and primary duties.
Rooms To Go Dispatcher: I was a dispatcher. My job there was to go ahead and help out the drivers when they needed help when they were making delivery. If the customer wasn’t home or if they had some issues with the furniture, I would go ahead and talk to the drivers and also assist the customer.

Interviewer: What was the work environment like?
Rooms To Go Dispatcher: It was friendly. Everybody was there … I wouldn’t say that they were helpful, like management wise, they wouldn’t help as much but all of the other co-workers, it was a friendly environment. You got to know each other. You got to actually meet outside of work and spend time with them so it was friendly. When it came to work, you wouldn’t get much help if you had a problem. If you couldn’t solve it yourself, management wise, it was a lack of help there.

Interviewer: How would you describe the application and interview process?
Rooms To Go Dispatcher: My interview was, literally, maybe five to ten minutes. He just asked me simple questions, my previous jobs that I had, my school, if I was going to college or if I was in high school. From what I remember, that was basically it. He just asked me what kind of schedule would you want to work and he was like, okay, you can start next week. It wasn’t really a tough interview. It was just like an in and out, you’re hired.

Interviewer: What set you apart from other candidates?
Rooms To Go Dispatcher: I put all my work into the job. There’s a lot of people that wouldn’t. They wouldn’t give their 100%, they would give maybe their 75% or sometimes even 50. They would miss work whenever they want. I would think they could actually set up better policies. They were really lenient with the work that they would provide so I think really didn’t have much competition with the other employees.

Interviewer: What other advice would you give to a job seeker looking to gain employment?
Rooms To Go Dispatcher: Take notes of what they first learn. After that, pay really attention and ask all of the questions that you have because later on, if you don’t ask questions, you’re not going to get much help. You’re on your own a lot of the times managers are not there. They’re at the warehouse maybe or you’ll call them or something, they’re not able to help you. Take good notes from the beginning. Take really good notes from the beginning and ask all the questions you have because later on it will be complicated.

    The process is pretty long. I applied at one store and the manager set an appointment for the next day. The interview went great but apparently the store mqnager isnt doesn’t have the power to hire you. He can only recommend you and send your resume to the regional manager and if he likes your app then he will call you and set up an interview with him at his office, which in my case was about an hour away. During that interview he will tell you that the turn around rate is almost non existent and they don’t do much hiring so when they do they hire for the conpany rather than the store and will ask if you are willing to work at a different location. If they are interested in you then the regional manager will try to find a store that’s a good fit based on your sales experience. Slower store for less experience and busier one for high experience. Then he will email your app to the store he thinks works for you and that store manager has the option of calling you to set up an interview. If that interview goes well then he still has to call the regional manager and tell him how the interview went and the regional manager decides if he wants to call you and give you the job. Once you get the job you have to do a background check and pass a drug test. Once that’s done you will have to pay $300 for “training supplies” and go thru 3 weeks of training where they will pay you $300/week. It took me almost a month until I actually went in for my first day of training. If you desperately need money and you really want to work there id reccomend either getting a temp job while you go thru the interview process or stay at your current job until you actually get scheduled for you first day. It takes almost a month to actually start working but once you do and you figure out what you’re doing you’ll make a lot of money. They will seriously fire you if you only make $40k in your first year.. no joke I’ve seen it. All in all its an awesome place to work if you can make it through the interview process.
