Video Transcript

Interviewer: Please describe your job title and primary duties.
Safeway Courtesy Clerk: I was a courtesy clerk, so I did bagging items, helping customers carry their items to cars and overall customer service, restocking items, re-shelving. That’s what I did.

Interviewer: What was the work environment like?
Safeway Courtesy Clerk: They were really friendly. The employers were really friendly. The customers were pretty polite. I mean, you get the occasional nitpicky customers, but Safeway – they demand pretty high-quality customer service standards, so it was reasonable.

Interviewer: How would you describe the application and interview process?
Safeway Courtesy Clerk: The application process, I did it by paper and turned it in.

Interviewer: What set you apart from other candidates?
Safeway Courtesy Clerk: I would say applying early. I applied as a seasonal employee, so there’s a rush of students trying to get jobs over the summer, and I applied pretty early, so I think that really helped me. And also my mom was working at Safeway, so I think that helped me get a foot in the door. I put that down on my application, and I think that helped.

Interviewer: What other advice would you give to a job seeker looking to gain employment?
Safeway Courtesy Clerk: Be professional. Apply early. I think that’s important. And show that you can be polite as it relates to customer service.

Interviewer: Please describe your job title and primary duties.
Safeway Courtesy Clerk: At first, I was a courtesy clerk. I bagged groceries, pushed carts, cleaned up spills, and then I was promoted to cashier. I worked behind the register, and I checked the groceries and bagged them, too – customer service.

Interviewer: What was the work environment like?
Safeway Courtesy Clerk: It was nine-hour shifts, if you were working full-time. It was kind of stressful, because you were on your feet for nine hours. But, ou get to talk to customers. I like that. You get to be close with everybody you work with. It was cool.

Interviewer: Please describe a typical day as an employee.
Safeway Courtesy Clerk: You get there, you help at the check stand. You check for approximately two-and-a-half hours, and then you get a break. You don’t really leave your little cubicle ever. After your break, you work again. You just go to lunch and come back and do it again. It’s pretty repetitive, not too difficult.

Interviewer: How would you describe the application and interview process?
Safeway Courtesy Clerk: You sign up online, and then you wait. It took me about a month and a half before I could actually get in for an interview. They just ask you basic questions, like: “Where have you worked before? Why do you want to work here? What have you heard about us?” Then, you had a drug test. For courtesy clerk, you don’t have to do any testing, but to be a cashier you have to take an online test and pass it to show that you can do it.

Interviewer: What questions did the interviewer ask during the job interview?
Safeway Courtesy Clerk: If I’d ever been convicted of a felony, I guess. Just basic stuff, nothing too important.

Interviewer: What set you apart from other candidates?
Safeway Courtesy Clerk: I just kept going back. Like I said, it took me a month and a half before I actually got the job. So, you have to be diligent about wanting to work there.

Interviewer: What other advice would you give to a job seeker looking to gain employment?
Safeway Courtesy Clerk: When you sign up online, you have to call them. You have to go back in, or they won’t call you back. It’s all about you putting in the effort to get a job there. They won’t really contact you. Then, be on time, work hard. That’s about it.
