How to Get a Job at Sam's Club
As one of the ten largest retailers in the country, Sam's Club must interview and hire new workers with great regularity. The Walmart-owned company makes every effort to maintain a standardized method of interviewing job seekers at more than 600 stores in the United States.
Three interview sessions:
Getting a job with the retailer entails participation in three separate interview sessions. The company holds the interviews either consecutively on the same day or over the course of a week or two. Candidates usually face a manager individually during each round of interviews.
The job titles held by interviewers generally increase in seniority as applicants advance to later rounds. The company basically follows the same procedure whether interviewing entry-level job hopefuls or management career seekers.
Common Interview Questions
What Questions Do They Ask?Candidates interviewing for entry-level Sam's Club jobs meet with a supervisor or team lead to start. The first interview provides a platform for applicants to talk about any current or previous jobs and answer a series of behavioral questions designed to shed light on personal ways of tackling certain situations.
Depending on the quality of responses, job seekers then advance to the second round of interviews, typically conducted by an associate manager. The second interview frequently includes a discussion of the job description and questions designed to see if candidates have the aptitude to work at Sam's Club.
More of an informal conversation, the third and final interview serves as a relaxed meeting with the general manager to confirm availability, discuss the mandatory drug test, and generally become acquainted with the highest ranking employee in the store.
Managerial Interviews
Job seekers in consideration for management positions also complete three rounds of interviews at most. District managers and human resources officials preside over managerial interviews, sometimes as a panel. The interview questions tend to be more specific to the potential job duties of the particular position, as the company needs to know whether applicants have the right combination of ability, experience, and personality to succeed as a manager.
Sam’s Club interviewees often encounter queries like:
- Describe a time you made a good suggestion.
- What makes you feel satisfied with your job?
- What makes you feel qualified for the job?
- What would your friends say about you?
- How do you you’re your goals happen?
Interviewers may also ask candidates to respond to brief scenarios involving the resolution of various customer and personnel issues.
How to Stand Out
By using three rounds of interviews to fill even entry-level positions, the company reveals a commitment to maintaining a thorough, professional hiring process.
What Should You Wear?
Applicants should exemplify the same commitment to professionalism by dressing in reasonably formal apparel, showing up for the interview on time, and greeting the hiring manager warmly with a firm handshake.
As Sam's Club relies on the selling skills of employees to increase membership, interviewees should be as engaging and outgoing as possible to demonstrate a good fit for the job. While the retailer often hires candidates at the close of the final interview, other contenders should contact the appropriate interviewer after a few days to reestablish interest in the position and possibly obtain feedback on areas of improvement for future interviews.
Sam’s Club Cart Attendant Interview Video
Video Transcript
Interviewer: Please describe your job title and primary duties.
Sam’s Club Employee: At Sam’s Club, I was a cart pusher, and I pushed shopping carts.
Interviewer: What was the work environment like?
Sam’s Club Employee: I didn’t deal with customers too often, but I was mostly outside, so it was outside weather conditions. Then inside, I’d say, there wasn’t a lot of communication. Maybe every so often, a manager would say, “Hey, go get some carts.” But other than that, not a lot of interaction with the manager and cart pusher.
Interviewer: What was your favorite part about working there?
Sam’s Club Employee: Being outside and the benefits were pretty decent for what the job entailed. I believe there was full medical, maybe. Perhaps… I forget, it’s been a while. I apologize. Definitely health and dental insurance. There were stock options. I was able to take the money that I earned, and put it towards company stock. There was vacation pay, I believe, yearly. I can’t think of anything else.
Interviewer: How would you describe the application and interview process?
Sam’s Club Employee: The application process was online. They had a kiosk you would go to and fill out. The interview process was rather quick. It’s your basic straightforward questions, like what you see yourself doing in such amount of time, how you can help the company.
Interviewer: What questions did the interviewer ask during the job interview?
Sam’s Club Employee: Pretty much when I was available to work. And I think they wanted to know if I could lift 50 pounds, too. Pretty much just if I’m capable of doing the job. If I could be capable of showing up to the job, as well.
Interviewer: What other advice would you give to a job seeker looking to gain employment?
Sam’s Club Employee: Be clear about what job you’re applying for.
