What State Farm Looks For in a Candidate
National insurance company State Farm looks for employees who are passionate about working for an industry leader. Interviewer: Please describe your job title and primary duties.
State Farm Employee: At State Farm, I was an intern and also a cold caller, meaning I called random numbers to see if they wanted any quotes on car insurance, home insurance, any of those insurances. I also, as an intern, filed a lot of things, answered phones, took messages, did paperwork, sent mail, and also things you would do as an intern, I guess.
Interviewer: What was the work environment like?
State Farm Employee: It was a smaller agency, so it was really close. We had about no more than seven employees – ranging from our boss down to us – and it was really close-knit. Everyone knew everyone else, talked, things like that. It was really comfortable, also, but not too comfortable that people slacked off. But I liked it.
Interviewer: What was your favorite part about working there?
State Farm Employee: One of my favorite things about working there was the freedom to do the things that I was able to do, meaning that if I wanted to start a task at this time, I could start it at this time, as long as I got it done. Basically, the freedom to do tasks any way I wanted as long as I got it done.
Interviewer: Please describe a typical day as an employee.
State Farm Employee: Came in, checked the mail. After doing that we checked messages, answered phone calls that were given back to us, and then on a typical day we would start cold-calling. And while we’re cold-calling, we’re also doing calls, filing the mail, just filing things. So, that was the majority of the day.
Interviewer: What questions did the interviewer ask during the job interview?
State Farm Employee: They wanted to know what I was interested in, what I was studying in school, what I wanted to study in school. Also, they wanted to know what some of my habits were, like if I were an early bird, were someone who kind of procrastinated, also any skills or qualifications that I had. I was really good at Microsoft Office, like Excel, and things like that.
Interviewer: What set you apart from other candidates?
State Farm Employee: I would say that one was my knowledge of Microsoft. I think at the time it was 2007, so I had great knowledge in Access, and Word, and Publisher, and I think that was something that they were looking for. And, I felt like I was personable, so it wasn’t a facade or anything that showed in the interview.
Interviewer: What other advice would you give to a job seeker looking to gain employment?
State Farm Employee: To do research on the actual company before you go into the interview, know what State Farm offers and what they do for their customers, so that way you know what qualifications and what skills you have that will go along with your goals as a company.
