Interviewer: Please describe your job title and primary duties.
Subway Sandwich Artist: I was a sandwich artist. So I literally just made the sandwiches, did all the stocking if we ran out of something. I trained the trainees as well. I pretty much did everything and even sometimes when our assistant manager wasn’t there or our manager wasn’t there, I was the most trustable one, so I would be running the store.
Interviewer: What was the work environment like?
Subway Sandwich Artist: It was really cool, real laid back because our Subway wasn’t terribly busy. We had busy hours but besides those busy hours it was pretty relaxed. It was real nice. My manager, she was really friendly, she was really cool. Then the owner of the store, he didn’t come in a lot obviously because he owned a couple other stores. So it was fun.
Interviewer: What was your favorite part about working there?
Subway Sandwich Artist: If I did good, like had a good day or whatever, my manager felt like I deserved a free sub. That was always nice. Getting free food is always cool.
Interviewer: Please describe the application and interview process.
Subway Sandwich Artist: I walked in, asked for a job application. Got the application, came back a day later, filled it out. They had me do it on an iPad in the store. It was different, I’ve never done an application online in a store. I was kind of confused but it was cool. Then had the little interview. The application process, it was kind of lengthy. I don’t know, some of the stuff I felt like might have been a little unnecessary, but it is what it is. But it was pretty simple, pretty quick, I guess. Then she showed me around all the stuff I would be doing, because they had just hired someone. Ran through the job, how it would be like, how would you do? The busy hours and stuff like that and a general feel of what I should expect.
Interviewer: What questions did the interviewer ask during the job interview?
Subway Sandwich Artist: What is your availability? Prior experience. What would you say a worker you are? I’m really hands on and really quick to learn things, so that was good for her to know because she had, had other people that it takes multiple times to understand how to get the job done. Me, it was only like once and I was cool. Telling me what things will get me fired of course, things that will be able to promote me and move me up throughout the company. What not to do when talking to a customer, what to do, how to address them. That’s about it.
Interviewer: How were you notified that you received the job?
Subway Sandwich Artist: I got the job on the spot.
Interviewer: What other advice would you give to a job seeker looking to gain employment?
Subway Sandwich Artist: Don’t be late, for sure. Well, that’s just in life, I guess, and if you are, let them know. Make sure you get good at cutting bread fast, that can be challenging. Definitely hold both parts of the sandwich down while you’re cutting it or else it will fall open and all the meat, vegetables go on the floor. I’ve never done that but I’ve watched multiple trainees do it. I’ll tell them and it just doesn’t happen. It’s just one ear through out the other. Just be nice to the customers because it makes it a lot more easy for you and they tip you, which is great.

Interviewer: Please describe your job title and primary duties.
Subway Sandwich Artist: My primary job title was a sandwich artist, and my duties were mainly to open up the store if you worked in the morning or if you worked at night you had to close the store, keep it clean, prepare the food for the customers, and just keep everything stocked and the store clean.
Interviewer: What was the work environment like?
Subway Sandwich Artist: The work environment was good at Subway. You work with a lot of high school kids, especially the one I worked at. During the day, it was older people, but regardless, it was a busy environment. There are always people at Subway. There’s always something to do, so you’re pretty busy.
Interviewer: What was your favorite part about working there?
Subway Sandwich Artist: My favorite part about working there was probably the flexibility that they had with scheduling. Being a high school student at the time and in college, they’re really flexible about working around your class schedule and sports and extracurricular activities. That was probably my favorite part about working there.
Interviewer: Please describe a typical day as an employee.
Subway Sandwich Artist: A typical day… when you come in the evenings like I usually did, you usually make a little bit of bread, stock everything, and get ready for the afternoon rush and dinner rush. After the dinner rush is over, you basically clean the store and get ready to close.
Interviewer: How would you describe the application and interview process?
Subway Sandwich Artist: The application process was pretty easy; you just fill out the application and turn it in. At that point it wasn’t online; I think it is now, though. Then, when you interview, they pretty much go over everything you put on the application, like your education, math problems to make sure you can count money and hand people change, and I think that’s it.
Interviewer: What should an applicant wear to the job interview?
Subway Sandwich Artist: I think that it’s not too casual. In my opinion, you don’t need to wear dress pants or a dress shirt. That’s not frowned upon, but I think just normal jeans, khakis would be sufficient.
Interviewer: What questions did the interviewer ask during the interview?
Subway Sandwich Artist: I don’t think any stood out. It was more of just a review of what you put on your application and when you could work, and where you worked before that, what you liked or disliked about those jobs. They kind of wanted to determine what your work ethic would be, to see if you were right for hiring.
Interviewer: What other advice would you give to a job seeker looking to gain employment?
Subway Sandwich Artist: I think that if you put on a good interview, you go in persistent on getting hired, you go in to talk with the manager, you give a call back after a couple weeks, I think that will really look good on your part. It tells the chain that you really want the job there and that you’re willing to work for it, and I think that really helps you out.
