In our last video, we covered “why do you want the job?” Today, we will look at a very similar question, which is “why do you want to work here?” They may seem like the same question, but there is a difference. “Why do you want the job?” is a broader question. In your response, you can talk about why you are interest in the role, what your goals are, and why you want to be with the company. “Why do you want to work here?” is more focused. With this question, the interviewer wants to know why you for them specifically. Sometimes, the interviewer just wants to see if you know anything about the company.
The best way to form your answer is to do a lot of research on the company before the interview. Find things that get you excited about the company and be sure to show the excitement in your answer. Remember, interviewers love hiring people that are enthusiastic about working for them. Plus, you want to work somewhere that interests you. So this question is your chance to show how much you’d enjoy working there.
Topics you could talk about could be their products or services that you like or new initiatives they have launched that intrigued you. Whatever you pick, be enthusiastic about it. Express how you are excited to help them be every greater at what they do. For example you could say something like, “I’m crazy about emerging technology and your app is hand-down the best in the industry. I know there is stiff competition in the space right now, but with the right management, this could easily be number one in the market. I’m excited to be part of the team to get you to that point.”
You could also talk about the company culture, like their core values, training programs, and work environment. Don’t say what you like about the company and end your answer there. Saying something like, “I heard you have a laid back work environment. That really appeals to me because I hate getting stressed out at work.” Nothing in that answer will win over an interviewer.
Make sure to explain how their company culture matches your working style. So, here’s a different way you can express the same idea I just mentioned. “I see you have a work environment that is very collaborative and open to new ideas even from newer employees. I thrive in environment like that and would really look forward to being able to add ideas and provide a meaningful impact from day one.”
So by going into detail about what you like about the company, and talking about how you are excited to help them in their mission, you have an easy way to answer, “Why do you want to work here?’ See you next time.

[Transcript] She did a good job providing a detailed and well-thought-out answer. Sometimes interviewees give brief answers which lack any insight as to why they truly want to work for the companies they are applying for. Answers like “Because I need a job or I’ve always wanted to work here” are too basic and won’t make you stand out from the competition.
Our candidate effectively articulated what she was looking for and why. You’ll notice she laid out the type of positon she was after, what interested the about the opportunity, and what she hoped to accomplish. She focused primarily on how the role itself interested her. That’s good, but I would also suggest adding why the company interests you.
To make her answer a little better, she could have also tied in her skills. If she would have showed that she was interested in the job AND that she was capable of doing it, it would have really been a spectacular answer.
Following what I just laid out, you can answer this question easily by breaking your response into three parts. First, describe what interests you about the position itself. You could tell the interviewer why you are passionate about your line of work or what you are looking to accomplish.
Second, say why you like the company. You could talk about specific things the company does which appeal to you or highlight their company culture and you fit into it. It’s a good idea to tie back to the employer because, as with most interview questions, your answers shouldn’t be all about you. Interviewers really want to hear how you would be a benefit to them, which brings us it the third and final part of the answer.
Tie up your response by showing how you will be an asset to the company. Talking about how much you love a company is great, but to really step up your answer, show how you have something to offer that they need. Bring up one of your key skills to prove to the interviewer that you are someone who will help the company succeed.
If you follow this strategy, your answer should sound something like this, “I’ve always had a passion for programming. I started making my own websites when I was in middle school and haven’t stopped since. I’m interested in working for your company because you are always innovating, especially with the latest project you’ve announce. I know that to make projects like this work, you need detail-oriented programmers. That’s where I really shine because I have over three years where attention to detail was vital. I feel like this is an ideal opportunity.”
Sometimes, interviewers want to see how much you know about them and why you think you are a fit. In those cases they pose the question as “why do you want to work here?” You can take a little bit of a different approach answering this question. So if you want to learn how, watch the video here.

[Transcript] This answer was a good start, but it’s too vague. Speaking in generalities rarely wins over interviewers. He could easily improve this answer by going into more detail and giving reasons which explain why his last boss would say those things about him. Here’s another example of an answer that isn’t very convincing because it is too generic. After she answered, we simply asked her to give a reason why her boss would commended her like she stated and here is what she added:
See how much more convincing that little addition makes her answer? With this interview question, you need to be able to back up your claims with some reasoning. Something verifiable, like a performance review, would be very effective here. Performance reviews are ideal because they are unbiased. They tell the interviewer how the company actually perceived you instead of how you claim they did.
When you make a statement like, “My last boss would say I’m motivated,” you can then validate it by adding: “In fact, she mentioned that in my last performance review with the company. She praised me for my self-motivation and said she appreciated how I always worked with a sense of urgency.”
If you plan to talk about a performance review, it would be best to bring a copy of it to the interview. That way you can tell then say “I brought it with me if you would like to see it.” In doing that, you have tangible evidence to support your claims. It will also show that you did some preparation for the interview, which interviewers appreciate.
(Most employers will let you have a copy of your performance review, but remember, its’s easiest to get that copy at the time of the review.)
A letter of recommendation is another way to give your claim some validity. And again, it’s something you can bring with you as proof.
(You want to use letters of recommendations from past supervisors, instructors, or coaches)

If you don’t have things like performance reviews or letters of recommendation to draw your answer from, you still have other choices. You could show off your sales skills by highlighting sales goals you’ve surpassed. Or you could brag about your productivity by bringing up any performance-based rewards you’ve earned.
Finally, if you don’t have anything evidence which can validate why your boss would commend you, then tell a story about a time where you did an excellent job and improved the company. A good way to frame your story is to use the C.A.R. method, which I talk about more in depth here.
Now that you know you can use performance reviews, recommendations, past performances, and success stories, you should have no trouble answering “How would your last boss describe you?”

[Transcript] This was an okay answer. He talks about being self-motivated and setting personal goals, but overall, the answer is a little generic.
Companies love hiring people with passion, so this is your chance to show what you are enthusiastic about. Be specific with what motivates you. What excites you about your work? What are you working towards each day?
Some areas you could cover could be career aspirations, desire to earn recognition, or the satisfaction of a job well done. It may seem obvious, but never mention that money as a motivator.
Let’s say you’re interviewing for a customer service position at a retail store. You could say that you are driven to give each customer an excellent experience and your goal is to transform new customers into regulars who will ask for you by name whenever they come in. Or you could also say you are very goal-driven and you strive to lead the team in sales numbers every week.
Make sure you choose an area of motivation that is relevant to the job because the interviewer will be wonder if the role would something you could be motivated by.
Just remember to be enthusiastic and show your passion and you’ll do fine with this answer.

Our participant does a good job following the C.A.R. method. If you don’t know what the C.A.R method is, click the video window to my right to learn everything you need to know about it. He starts with a challenge, describes the actions he took, and wraps it up by providing a positive outcome. However, he isn’t very compelling with the challenge he selected. Essentially, he says that he was in a role where he didn’t receive a lot of direction. From there he seemingly recounted the duties of his job. This caused the answer to go on a little too long. It wasn’t very engaging to begin with, so he’d probably lose the interest of most interviewers. Instead providing a generic challenge, he should focus on one major obstacle and how he applied his talents to overcome it. With a little bit of tweaking, this could be a much better answer. I really like this answer. It’s genuine and he really picked a tough situation. His choice pays off because the response reflects a number of positive traits. First, it shows that he cares about improving how his company runs and is proactive in doing so. His answer also shows that he was brave enough to offer constructive criticism to a supervisor, which isn’t a pleasant thing to do. Finally, the fact that the boss listened to his advice and amended his managing style shows how respected and trusted our participant was as an employee.
When you answer this question, pick a compelling story that will engage the interviewer. Remember that any question phrased like “tell me about a time when” or “describe a situation where you” is a behavioral question, which requires you to pick a real-life example. Try to think over your past accomplishments before the interview so you will have quality stories to share. The worst answer would be “I can’t think of anything.” Something irrelevant to the job, like a struggle in your personally life wouldn’t be much better either.
With your story, you want to pick a situation where you used a key skill to turn a bad situation around. Make sure to choose a situation that will reflect relevant skills to the job. Also, try to highlight something that happened in your recent career history. Relevant work is always the best, but an example from school or athletics may suffice.
The best way to tell your story is though the C.A.R. method.
Make sure to keep your story succinct and to the point. You’ll lose the interviewer if your response is more than a minute or two. One final note for answering this question, avoid painting former coworkers or managers in a negative light. It only reflects poorly on you. Our participant successfully illustrated a difficult situation without disparaging anyone, and you can do it too. Thanks for watching.

This question can also be phrased as how do you handle criticism or describe a time where you were criticized, and it can be pretty tricky to answer. You don’t want to say that you are perfect and never receive criticism, but you also don’t want to seem as though you get citizen frequently. With taking criticism, you don’t want to come across as delicate and easily discouraged nor do you want to present yourself as arrogant and above taking feedback. Here are some examples of good ways to answer the question.
If you are asked to talk about an area you were criticized on in the past, try not to pick a something that will be central to the job you are applying for. Pick something legitimate and show that you accepted the criticism and worked to improve it.
Remember, employers like to hire individuals who are intent on improving their skills in order to do the best work possible. Showing a willingness to take feedback demonstrates that you are that type of person.

This is a good response. You always want to say that you are great at managing your time and accomplishing tasks, and it helps to detail how you learned time management, like how our participant does when he mentions that he developed the skill in college. Additionally, you should talk about the tactics you use to be successful at time management. Notice how the following interviewees detail what they do to manage their time.
You can also tell the interviewer a story about a time when you were faced with time constraints and explain the steps you took to accomplish your goal on time. As long as you give a good view of your process for finishing work on time, you’ll have a great answer for this question.
