What to Expect in the Hiring Process
The interview process generally takes about a week or two to complete. Many applicants encounter multiple job interviews during the hiring process, although prospective entry-level associates commonly encounter a single interview for employment consideration. Specific job interview formats typically consist of phone interviews and one-on-one interviews with a hiring representative. Additional employment requirements may include background checks, personality tests, skills tests, and drug screens. Vons interviews commonly occur with store managers, district managers, human resources representatives, and general managers.
Interview Questions
Each interview may last anywhere from 20 minutes to an hour. Vons interview questions probe personality traits and pose hypothetical situations to applicants, such as:
- "What would you do if you noticed a coworker wasn't performing to expectations?"
- "If you couldn't find the right product for a customer, how would you help?"
- Why do you want to work here?
- "Could you describe yourself?"
Tips For Answering Vons Interview Questions
More detailed interview questions applicants might run across include common situations involving customers. The company hires workers who go to extra lengths to help patrons. For example, an interviewer may ask, "If a customer asked where an item was, how would you assist them?" Candidates might respond to the question by pointing the customer in the direction of the item. However, Vons looks for candidates who would physically take the customer to the item, point it out on the shelf, and then ask if there is anything else the customer needs assistance with. Customer service ranks as a major selling point during interviews. Applicants should continuously demonstrate motivation and enthusiasm to help others in order to gain favor in the deliberation process.
How to Stand Out and Make a Good Impression
Exude confidence, smile often, and show enthusiasm for the job. Arrive early to practice responses to basic Vons interview questions before each hiring session. Being able to recite company history and familiarity with store layouts and products greatly benefit candidates. Provide examples of past experiences in the grocery store or retail industry from previous jobs. Most interviewees receive a job offer within a few days of successfully completing the Vons interview process. Official employment decisions may occur during the final session.
Vons Courtesy Clerk Interview Video
Video Transcript
Interviewer: Please describe your job title and primary duties.
Vons Employee: At Vons, I started working there when I was 15. I was employed as a courtesy clerk, which means that you help bag groceries, you also gather carts, help customers out. You do go-backs, which means any products that customers left behind, you have to put back in your original place. And that’s about it.
Interviewer: What was the work environment like?
Vons Employee: The work environment was very cheery. Meet a lot of customers – they all have different stories, you get to know them. That was one of the nicer aspects of the job. You’re always busy, so the day goes by quickly, because you’re always running around doing one thing or another. Overall, it was a great experience.
Interviewer: How would you describe the application and interview process?
Vons Employee: There’s an online application, and you kind of have to fill that out, then call them, because they get so many applications. You’re probably not going to get the job if you fill it out and just leave it in their million-application stockpile. And once I did that, I was interviewed, and was hired right away.
Interviewer: What questions did the interviewer ask during the job interview?
Vons Employee: Do I speak English, am I friendly, am I good with customers, am I a hard worker, things like that. I mean, it’s not the hardest job, doesn’t require that much skill. They’re just looking for able-bodied people who are friendly.
Interviewer: What other advice would you give to a job seeker looking to gain employment?
Vons Employee: I’d tell to be really friendly, be really outgoing, because Vons has this program they grade their employees on. They have secret shoppers that come in and kind of score customer service, and you could do a lot better, you’ll get a raise quicker if you’re very friendly, you actually show that you want to be there, at least pretend you want to be there. So, I encourage everyone to be really friendly.
